My 1991 sport nautique recently purchased has the protec ignition. It has stopped providing spark twice now (yes I'm sure) after a run of 20-30 minutes and then sitting on the beach for 1-2 hours. It eventually cools down and starts working again, but this is the pits I can't duplicate the problem at home on the hose.. So I have a DUI distributor coming, and need a little help on the install. I've read there is a good post by Jpass somewhere but can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Several CCF members have successfully performed the “reassignment” engine surgery.  You’ll get plenty of help.  Check your Private Messages.

It's alive!
I finished the conversion today, and it fired right up! I got a marine distributor from AAAmarine, and new wires from summit. I returned the automotive one summit sent, but kept the coil for an extra for my 90SN. It was pretty straight forward, just a little awkward for an old guy.
Gray wire for tach, red for power, both from wiring that went to the protec unit. I put #1 wire at 11 o'clock, and set the rotor pointer looking right at it, started the 13726548 sequence cc wise. I used a timing light after it warmed up to 160 on the fake a lake hose hookup. and it was dead on the pointer with no adjustment needed! Am I good or lucky?
BTW, the DUI unit is not currently available anywhere, it's on back order until August. The AAAmarine one is a very nicely finished unit, and on sale for $140!

This might start some kind of "discussion" about prices and construction of the AAA as compared to the DUI distributor.

Got a 2 piece shaft on the AAA ? Looks like it in their pictures on the website. That's how most of the Chinese copies are built.

Right, wrong or otherwise some people around here have taken a 50 dollar Chinese HEI and "converted" it to marine  Nautiquehunter comes to mind

All those Chinese HEI's are nicely finished.

Check your timing, you'll probably find about 20 to 22 degrees on top of whatever your initial timing is.(about the same as the DUI)

I checked out AAAmarine and called them too, seemed like great people to me. 2 day usps was $20 priorty mail. The cam gear is cast iron and turns the right way, I couldn't tell any quality difference from the one Summit sent that wasn't marine specific.
So since the Marine DUI was on back order til August, I forged ahead with what was available. We'll see how it performs soon enough.
As Captain Ron says, lets take it out on the open ocean, if anything is going to go wrong, it'll happen out there!

How about a short term report on how the distributor is working out for you?

What do you get for advance numbers
