79 BFN with 454 does in gear

My 79BFN will start and run fine then when I stop and put it back into gear the boat does. I need to turn the idle screw up to 1500+ rpm to get back into gear to run but it slams into gear and runs like 8 mph

I can't quite figure out if you start it cold and drive it around for a while, then stop and then you have the problem when you put it back in gear (quote 1) or if you start it cold and put it in gear, it quits (quote 2)

What do you have for an ignition system on the engine?
