Recently purchased a 1989 Sport Nautique (351 PCM). I was told initially that it would need a new carburetor. It started right up and idled great once the new carb (Holley 4160 electric choke) was installed. However, now it will occasionally stall out while taking off, only seems to happen when pulling boarders/tubers. The day after that began happening, it took a while to get it started, once it did start I could smell fuel and it smoked heavily for a second. After start up it ran fine (other than stalling occasionally during takeoff as mentioned) and would restart instantly if I shut it off. Next day had the same startup issue, only seems to be a problem when it's not warmed up. I tried adjusting the choke. I plan on changing the fuel filter this week as well. Has anyone had similar issues or have any ideas? Thank you!

Welp, should have began with the filter, but alas.

Sounds you have to set idle mix to strongest idle in gear, confirm acell pump is not sloppy, and check initial timing.

Sounds to me like it is flooding on initial take off.  Maybe your floats are set too high to work in your boat application?

Make sure your throttle cable is adjusted properly.  I had a similar issue and after I adjusted my Throttle cable using 81Nautique's method, I no longer have stalls when taking off and helped with hot starts as well.  I believe I was flooding the engine because I was giving it gas as soon as the throttle was moved and before the transmission was engaged.  Once the transmission engaged the engine would bog down and die. Then it would take forever to restart due to flooding.  

Instead of my throttle giving gas as the transmission engaged(First indent) it was giving it as soon as I moved the throttle.

There's a procedure to follow for properly adjusting your cables. Give these steps a try and you should be good to go.

1. Disconnect cables at trans and carb

2. At the morse control disconnect both cables and rotate the brass pin connector so there is approx 1/8" of thread showing at the cable end. Reconnect both cables to the morse.

3.At the transmission, place the transmission bracket(the one that the cable attached to) in neutral. You may have to move it back and forth to feel exactly where neutral is but it should detent in the center of travel. Once you find a firm neutral connect your trans cable.

4. Step 4 is the magic. Go back to the morse control and with the transmission engage button in, move the throttle lever to the forward engage detent. Just move it forward and it should lock into the forward position firmly, stop when it does so. Now go to the carb, adjust the cable connector so the throttle cable smoothly attaches to the carb stud without moving the throttle. You are done.


Hope this helps.  It took me forever to run down my problem and to find this cable adjustment. I hope this is all it is for you as well.
