Hi guys. I'm looking for some advice. I have the opportunity to buy a clean 196 with a blown transmission. It's running the 40a, 1.23 ratio. I'm based in the UK so the cost of shipping a new transmission makes the boat an uneconomical repair. I have a rebuilt velvet drive 1:1 which is a spare for my '88 2001. I was wondering if anyone has done the swap? I know the 40a output shaft is at an angle. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. |

What year is this 196? What's the engine? http://correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=51758&PID=615081&title=never-again-again#615081" rel="nofollow - link You'll need at a minimum a new prop shaft, you'll have to measure but it would be about 3 inches or so longer a new damper plate that's compatible with a Borg Warner transmission a new prop (Normal rotation) and it'll be around a 13X13 older style or a 13X12 Acme (ACME 541) as a good starting point. You'll have to orient the Borg Warner transmission pump so it'll work with a Normal Rotation engine otherwise you'll be permanently in Neutral if you don't do this. You can't make a BW 71C reverse the direction of engine rotation. Your front mounts might have enough adjustment, otherwise either new attaching brackets or in your case some spacers to raise the front of the engine (see the stuff in the linked thread about the mounts) Your exhaust hoses should handle the extra tilt of the engine. The engine box might have to be raised because the front of the engine will be higher. This at least gives you some stuff to think about  |
