Hi,
Back on this project after some time away from it. Had a previous thread in the Boat Maintenance forum. Problem - no forward acceleration when throttle is applied. Boat goes into gear and moves forward but will not go any faster once additional throttle is applied. Transmission is 1:1 Velvet Drive Reverse works fine. Accelerates fine in reverse. Transmission has been removed, bench tested with a drill and does not slip in forward or reverse. Dampener plate had a small crack in one spring and the center hub was loose. Replaced dampener plate with a new one. Reinstalled transmission and still have the exact same problem and symptoms. The original problem occurred instantaneously in the process of pulling a skier. No warning symptoms were detected. The transmission cooler did have partial blockage from weeds (50%). The transmission fluid has been changed now but had been neglected. Fluid was a brownish red color. Other symptoms The throttle does not click really nice into neutral. It just sort of slides through the neutral position. After this recent water test, transmission fluid was noticed (small leak) coming from the joint where the forward/reverse mechanism is located. Any other advice before I have the transmission rebuilt? Is the internal engage mechanism repair a subset of a complete transmission rebuild? |

No. Yes. Forward plates are worn down or forward piston seal is bad, i suspect. it's my understanding that the B-W tranny's work and they don't and if something isn't workng right then it needs rebuilt. You said the fluid was a brownish red color.
Did it look like this?

Randy, it wasn't quite that brown. I didn't take a picture but I think it was probably burnt rather than water but I will certainly have to keep an eye on it one we get it back together. Thanks, |

Thats the pump I was talking about. Thats what came out when I first got it. The previous owner left it in the water and the transmission got covered with water and it must have seeped in. I've changed it about 12 times. It seems fine. Eric seems to think I may be alright since it didn't run through too much. I guess we will find out this summer. I am going to change it again before I take it out, just because I have the dextron and it won't hurt. I think if you go to Eric's website his number is on there. I think he has a different shade of brown...definitly forward clutches slipping and burning the oil, it probably smells fowl also, when drill testing you really cant tell if trans is slipping, no quick fixes. this just seems plan old wore out. all the orings are probably rock hard with flat spots and trans is not sealing internally and causing it to slip
