Subject: Oil Weight for 302 PCM??
Date Posted: April-12-2007 at 12:38am
I need to know the what weight oil I should use for my '76 302? The engine is probably original. I've searched a lot of threads but still no real answer. I really want to know from someone who knows for sure from PCM what they currently recommend for the older v-8's. I know that I'm sticking with Valvoline, but I'm kind of confused whether I should use 10W-30 or 10W-40? I live in Florida. What are the opinions about synthetic blends with an older engine?? Thanks.

Adam; I am in Florida too as you know and I use 20W-50. I also run that weight in Tennessee when I am skiing alot. With the warm water temps and the warm air I like a little heavier oil. But there are lots of guys on here that know more than me.

Stick with conventional, especially on an older flat tappet motor. Valvoline and Rotella-T are the brands to go with. PCM's official recommendation is straight 40w, but you should be fine with 10w40, 15w40 or 20w50. JBear's recommendation is a good one- Id stick with one of the heavier weights since youre in FLA.

Also dont forget a quality filter (Motorcraft, Wix/NAPA, Purolator).

Thanks for the "props" Tim. I take that as a compliment as you know way more about these boats than I do.

Ok, and I also need to know the capacity of the oil?? I would think it was a total of 5 quarts with a filter change...but I'm not sure
