The engine (351W) in my 76 seems to turn over hard after the engine is hot. That is, after skiing for an hour and shutting the engine off while changing skiers, the engine tends to turn over hard. The boat runs absolutely perfect on the water.
It starts fine or normal when it's cold. If I hook a hose up to it on in the driveway and let it get to temp and then shut it off, let it sit for a few and then it will restart fine.
The timing is set at ~10 degrees, assuming my timing light is accurate. Should I back my timing to 9 degrees and see if it will start easier or will that make it worse?

dont rule out the starter, it may be getting a hot spot, timing is too close to give it a problem unless like you said your timiing light is off,
do yoo have to pump it alot or is the starter just turning over slower?

If nothing else works people have reported the same symptoms from a small leak in the exhaust manifolds. I hope and doubt thats not the case but it wouldnt be the first time.

When you shut the engine off check your back two barrels on your carb and make sure your not having raw fuel dumping into the intake manifold causing it to flood.I had this happen on my 302 in my 78 mustang causing a hard starting problem.It would start fine when it was cold also,just something to check.If thats the case your floats may be out of adjustment.

Yes, a degree or two less is an easy thing to try. I've seen too much initial cause your poor hot crank symptoms frequently.

If you think you have to much advance,next time its hard starting pull the coil wire to kill ignition.If it spins freely with no ignition you may have disstributer advance problems that springs are overcoming at rest
