Doesn't the classic have a 12" prop? Are you doing any mods to the shaft/strut to swing a larger dia. or just counting on higher RPM's and more prop pitch. I'm just thinking about how you are planning on getting that much HP to the water.

I figure this thread would be a better place for these pics that Reid posted.

This 390 was born in '63 as a 300HP engine with high-for-a-marine engine 9.6 compression. It's now up to an honest 10.3 according to Silvolite, who provided the forged flat tops. HM reground the cam to a more aggressive .480" lift pattern and we went with the Edelbrock Perf RPM intake shown and are hoping for maybe 340-350 solid HP. They would dyno it, but guess what,... the standard dyno won't do a rev rot engine.

Good question, I would be very interested in hearing how your prop selection/testing goes, that thing is going to be a monster.

Pete, Sorry I missed this post the other nite when I returned home. While I believe Classics originally had something like 12x14s from the factory with 312 engines, this boat came to me with a 13x14 which is on it now. Before the rebuild it would turn about 42-4400rpm. As you can see from this photo, a PO added this adjustable angle strut. There's evidence of a run-aground with glass repair above the prop, so I don't know why this was added and whether it was a replacement for a bent strut or installed when the engine was installed in '63 in order to gain more clearance. Someone else with an original strut Classic may be able to tell us how much clearance there is with whatever size prop, or mainly a 12" dia. Multiple previous owners ran it for years with 300HP and I'll assume a 13" prop but you never can tell. For a 17' boat she's on the heavy side at 2400-2500 lbs from what I've read, so it won't be a crazy amount of HP I don't think. If the boat runs 50-55 mph I'll be tickled. The engine is now a pretty light green with "Brainard approved" detailing. I lost a week on the project because of "Work" (I hate that stuff), but will be back at it this coming week. Gotta go to dinner now, catch back up later.

Reid, Do you know if the hull damage above the prop is from grounding and not erosion from the prop being to close to the hull? I can't really tell from the picture how much clearance there is.

What boat are you bringing to Green Lake?

Good Sunday morning all. Pete, the hull damage looks most definitely like a repair. The clearance between prop and hull on this boat, about 3/4", is actually greater than what I have on several Mustangs with 12"ers.
I'm currently like a kid anticipating Christmas morn on this project so I'll keep posting progress.

As for Green Lake, I'd love to bring this boat, esp with the fresh engine, but I don't think it'll fit in our toy hauler camper which we only measured and verified for a Mustang before buying and the Classic is somewhat wider. The camper is still down in FLA and yet to make it to our home for actual fitment testing. So it looks like the little light blue Mustang gets the nod. I'm trying dilegently to enlist another follower or two for the trip up who may be able to tow another boat which would be the 390.

Well the 390 is now green and back at Holman Moody. The pics make it look a little more blue than green. It was sort of hard justifying the painting of the intake, but I wanted the vintage orig look. Plus I plan to loose the wing tip valve cover bolts which were on it from a PO, and may loose the red plug wires also. Can't decide on them yet. I'll find out tomorrow whether it gets re-installed in the boat right there at HM and test-run on site. That will certainly be the quickest route, but you know the downside $$.

While there I also took pics of a couple of neat old Ford race cars, both 427 powered. I won't even try and compete with MM's bikini clad pics, but to some guys these seem to have the same effect.

That looks to be a 64 Thunderbolt. It would make a great tow vehicle for the old '62!

I can't tell which series the GT40 is.
Both machines are incredible, rare and extrememly valuable. Thanks for the 427 fix!

Ah yes, boats. Here is the pic of the strut from my '62 classic. I believe it to be original.

It is 5-1/2 inches from the center of the back of the strut to the hull. I currently have a 12x13 OJ 4 blade. The PO had a 13x14. Hence the hull rash around the rudder.

Your motor looks fantastic! I'm green with envy.

Reid, It sure looks good to me with the exceptions of the non original items you have already mentioned!!! The color correct paint job makes me want to pull my 312 and start working on it. I'll give it a couple more years unless something happens. I like yourself have other priorities / projects going on.

The plug wires and boots on my 4 cyl. Atom were not correct from when I rebuilt it 20 years ago. (white silicone) You can imagine how it drove me up a wall but somehow I put up with it untill it started running poorly. (I found lots of green corroded teminal ends but have since discovered dielectric grease!) It wasn't easy finding plain black wire that wasn't Bling purple or yellow!! I almost ended up having to buy a whole roll plus bags of 100 plug and distributor ends. A friend directed me to Fleet Farm and I ended up with a universal farm tractor set. Runs better with the plain wire than it did with the fancy stuff!! I found out that since it is the original 6 volt that plain wire is the only way to go and I didn't care how many TV's it screwed up!

MM, Yep that's the boat/engine you'll be running when you come up, IF... you're wearing that swimsuit.

Thanks quinner. I'm still looking forward to a day at Blarney's.

About the cars above, they were both build at the HM shop from the ground up just several years back, so not original. The Fairlane, while looking like a Thunderbolt drag car as Raindog mentioned, was actually custom built as a vintage road course racer for a customer.

Bremsen, Come on by! I thought I'd read somewhere that you were near. We're way down towards the end of Brawley on past The Point. By water you hit marker 7 then turn SE about 10 o'clock across the channel. Look for the white roof boathouse one dock in from point facing north. Normally we're hanging out by the dock on weekends and many weeknites when it's nice.

Oh, and tell Lee the guys at Essex say hello.

Eric, My wife picked up the mail yesterday and just told me now I had a nice little package from Medina, OH. She just emailed me a pict and you're right,it'll clean up nice. THANKS!! All, Eric hooked me up with a new Borg-Warner trans tag for this engine after the near-perfect original was accidentally voided of all paint by my crack whse engine clean-up crew, while thoughtfully cleaning the rest of the trans/bellhousing parts, etc..

I will post picts soon of the BFNs and esp the Python.

Thanks Pat, and I'm fine if it rolls just a little, and I can assure MM she's not a lift Queen, as we'll hopefully be cruising her for some breakin time in a few weeks when he shows up.

I dont' think there was any red on the engine at all originally, it just needed the bling, and thanks Mark for pointing that out to Pete. And the dinky flame arrestor is temp for sure Blondie, as it'll get a tall boy. This boat has the scoop on the box, so no fitment problems there, and no Pete, the scoop wasn't original, but it has been there for 40 years so I left it. Just kidding of course. The shop where the engine is sitting is actually Holman Moody's.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED! And the dogs are no longer embarrassed, as the engine is finally installed!! Plus I repainted the boat back to the original white and red, which looks OK I guess. And boy does it sound good,....and loud, I guess from regaining back all the lost compression and then some. I've got to do some fine alignment prior to shaft connnection and water testing, but otherwise she starts so easy with just a twist of the key with no throttle touch at all. And MM or Blondie, I got the big-boy flame arrestor also. Only sad news is that the carb on the higher Edelbrock intake doesn't clear the engine box, as beknownst to me, that scoop was never centered directly above the carb, so I need to do some slight wood and vinyl mods to move it aft about 3". Oh well. The next few weeks should be fun.

Eric, sorry but the new tag isn't on yet, but will be this week. Just got back into town this afternoon.

Pete, I don't know what that white spot is, but it's not really into the glass like the photo appears- wierd, as it's something that'll come off. Oh, and I love the red and white scheme also, as I was just kidding about having to revert back from Blondie's pink rendition, which is actually the same boat.

Here are a few recent picts from what we jokingly call for some reason the Boys Boat Club or BBC for short. And no, all the boats aren't MINE. Four of us have boats here and a big fridge full of cold ones, and we try to hang out at least one night a week and make up stories, some of which end up here. Once in a while we even pick up a wrench or a buffer. Besides the two Donzis, the Shamrock, and one brand X, all the boats are older CC's, and 2-3 are basket case projects for sometime down the road. Two other boats, the white/orange and green Mustangs are at the house. Anyone in the neighborhood is invited to give us a call and stop by for a beer (or soda), and talk CC-Speak. 704-451-5080

Got the phone message. Hope the trip back was smooth and safe. When will the trailer be back? Jo can't wait to be invited back. Of course, her dad will have to drive her down there.

Reid, All I can say is WOW!! Of coarse I wasn't surprised because I have looked at your ACBS listing and it takes up almost as much room as some of the boat brokers in the directory. Very nice and if you rationalized the building to what you would need to pay to have the boats stored I'm sure the numbers come out even over only several years.

You know me well enough that the add on home made trim tabs on the Classic are driving me nuts! With all that power now out of the 390, have you thought about removing them? I seem to remember you stating that the previous owner had put them on. He must have been doing a lot of slow speed cruising. I don't ever remember that hull having problems getting up on plane.

Reid,
Please, oh please bring the Classic.

I say this for the most selfish of reasons.

1. I gotta hear the FE390. Had one in my '67 Mustang fastback in high school.

2. If my wife can see what our boat _could_ be, It would make it really easy to get the green lite on a bunch of work this winter. Maybe even the trifecta: interior, paint and motor.

Then I hope to give you all some new competition in 2008.

Oh Larry, I'm so touched. Well, before MaddMarxx beats me to it, heres an update on the 390's maiden voyage just yesterday AM while he was here. Ran just fine, put a few hours on her and then late in day when all the crazies finally started going home, Mark, Marshall Morgan and I piled in for one last run on some hopefully calmer water. Cruised around a bit then headed back in and when within a couple hundred yards of the dock I decided to let her have it one time. The rpm's climbed quick and maybe a little higher than anticipated and right about the time I was about to let off there was loud bang, followed by a backfire, and I was off the gas immediately. Well, she idled down nicely as ever, and as we all looked at each other in complete shock I slipped the shifter back into forward and NOTHING. Opened the engine box and the shaft was spinning but we're not moving. So we yelled to Blondiegurl on the dock and she jumped on the wave runner and we towed her to the dock and pulled her out on the spot. The prop and the last 3" of shaft were GONE. We were in 20-40' of water and don't think we hit anything, and you could see where the prop hit the rudder but not the bottom of the hull. Prior to the rebuild and even yesterday, there seemed to be a bit of unique vibration and mechanical noise at higher rpm, but not having a good case history with the boat in terms of running time, I wasn't sure. While the 13x14 OJ prop looked great it may have had balance issues, or the shaft just fatigued from the torque (?) I don't know. I do know I needed a new higher pitch prop anyway, so it's only a temperary set back. But overall, it pulls good, sounds great AND loud, needs a carb secondary spring change, but otherwise gets the OK sign. And we are really trying hard to come up with the means to drag her to Green Lake. Where there's a will.........
Thanks Mark and Marshall for your help. Marks got some more picts as well. There's a shot of Mark and Lisa in the 69 Mustang also, which ran great with the new Hi-Teks but we didn't have a bench mark to test against with all new gauges from last year.

Too much HP for the old 1"? !! Reid, I'm sure you have already thought about it but since the Clasic had the adjustable strut when you got it, maybe the boat hit somthing at one time and the shaft had been straightened. It doesn't take much to put stress in a shaft where the fracture starts.

It's however looking fantastic! What about the trim tabs? Maybe you missed my earlier post about you keeping them or not. I figure with that much HP that thing should pop out of the water like a cork. I never thought they had a plaining problem without tabs.

Quinner, yeah it's quite short, and not very big around either. I'm searching hard for some propagra or propalis.

Pete, I think I'm with you on the stress issue, however no idea what all may have attributed to it. On the trim tab subject, I'd love nothing more than to loose them. However I'll then have to patch over 50 holes. I believe they were installed moreso to battle porpoising than aid in planing, as these boats were known to bounce. Prior to adjusting them up to the max, they would indeed push the nose down quickly and the boat planed more on the line of a new hull, but the speed and ride attitude were way down. We're planning to remove the shaft this evening and depending on length, we may have a new one collecting dust. I've got a new 12x16 OJ prop to try which might be the little more bite needed over the 13x14, which did rev a little high for my piece of mind.

Reid, I know there are several theories on the cause of porpoising but the one I concure with is that a hull with so much power will rise above the water and then lacking more power to keep it there will fall back down. "Band Aid" cures are shifting weight forward or the idea of the previous owner of your Classic, to install the tabs. With the extra power from the 390, you may push the hull past the porpoising stage. The only problem with this that I'm sure you are familiar with you other boats is that with very little of the hull left in the water, the handling can get real squirrely!

I hope you have some good luck with the 12X16 prop but I think you should be looking a larger dia. rather than larger pitch. As the pitch of a prop increases, the efficiency of the prop decreases. I know that prop manufacturers don't like anything over a 14" pitch due to the poor performance. The prop guys will have more details but I seem to remember a inch of dia. equals 2 to 3 inches of pitch.

Reid: That Red boat is sweet! I don't think I would ever close the motor box.

You might want to remember your ball-cap when you are out in the baot tho.

Now that all the guys are so impressed with your "stable" we are gonna have to return to calling you "the famous ReidP".

If your boat makes it to GL, and I get a ride, I'll make the same shirt for Mrs. P. that my wife has:

Pete, I'm still waiting on my new shaft which should be here tomorrow or Monday. I guess I will still try the 12x16 for sh&ts and grins as I mentioned prior, but after studying a few other things, I'm with you 100% on another 13" diameter wheel. This incident got me researching into the reason for the wierd adjustable strut, and I found this strut is about an inch deeper that what came on it to accommodate the orig 12" prop. Then easily noticing further that this engine and its larger 72 series transmission sit practically on the bottom of the boat with not an 1/8" clearance. I then realized that they had to go with this deeper-steeper angle strut so they could just get the engine to fit by increasing the angle and lifting the rear of the engine. Otherwise you'd have to move it way foward for bottom clearance which you can't do anyway because of the deck crossbeam. Then I remembered an engine swap that I tried to do several years ago with this '68 Nautique below which I've posted picts of before, where I wanted to install the 413 Chrysler in place of the orig blown 318. Wasn't gonna work as when I lowered the engine into place, the bellhousing hit the bottom while the trans coupling was still 1/2" above the shaft coupling. I could have made that one work yes, if I'd had an deeper strut with a steeper angle or adj strut, but either way allowing me to raise the shaft coupling by increasing the angle. Still learning FWIW.
