We are having some hesitation issues with my dads 87 martinique with the 351. had the carb rebuilt and no change. acts like it isnt getting ignition sometimes on takeoff. the rotor and cap and points all look good, and it hasnt had plugs in a while, so I was going to start there.
what recommendation for plugs and plug gap?

I have had great results with a set of Bosch platinum plugs. The are precision gapped at the factory, so unless you drop them, the gap is correct right out of the box.
How about the plug wires? If they are stiff or have any cracks, replace them.

Those are not the plus 4's are they?
what part number? or is it just the ones for a ford 351?

kyle t, Not to blow you out the water Hamlin,Buttttt put the stuff back that came in the motor,Autolite are the plug of Ford, why second guess them...
Hamlin if you want to put that JUNK in your motor so be it , but don't tell a newbie about your mistakes.
Autolite has a premium plat. plug that has a LIFETIME REPLACEMENT. What has that german plug offer?Buy American and keep it American.............boat dr

I know to stay away from the bosch plus 4's....
Ill pick up some autolites and go from there.

My opinion is that Ford is actually more interested in keeping the cost down and ends up choosing the lowest cost component that will meet their requirement. Bosch is standard in a lot of imported cars. I tend to trust the judgement of people that make quality cars. My experience comes from having a Ford and a Mercedes in the driveway. Althought they bend me over at the Mercedes dealer on price, I never second guess the quality. The Ford dealer just pisses me off on all accounts.
I don't know anything about the Plus 4's. All I know is that the platinum plugs I put in a 351 Indmar looked perfect everytime I checked them. Prior to that, the Autolites showed signs of fouling.
I will concede that the Dr. has mountains of experience more than I do. I replied to Kyle because no one had responded and I tend to look for the posts with 0's in the replies so no one is left hanging...

I would never use bosch plugs again, I had problems in my car along with many people I know. The stupid little platinum pucks were falling off into the combustion chamber.

Sometimes I will not reply to a topic,for a lot of reasons,the main one being.....
If I stay silent on an issue ,I may be thought to be....
If I open my mouth and am wrong or give bad info then and only then will everyone will indeed know that i am talking sh*t.
So to me,if I say or act on a situation,The Boat Doctor,BEEN THERE DONE THAT......
Back to your M/B do you do the maint. on that ride?And how do you determine that a plug is "showing signs of fouling"
To me a plug either good or bad, it is FOULED or it ain't.
There are a lot of guys that look here for good advice,not just a reply to an unanswered post that has little or no value.......
And the last point about Ford cutting cost,Fed. Emission Standards say: the standards must me maintained for 100,000 miles. That is the reason they use high quality plug and not that german crap................boat dr

I used to ride 2-stroke motocross bikes. Believe me, I know what a fouled plug looks like. I also know when to shut up and listen to the experts.

Put in new autolite plugs, the champions were not fouled out. Im gonna start a new thread, asi it ran fine sunday and then monday the issue came back.
