Yesterday my 1988 Ski Nautique alternator quit charging and a loud grinding noise came from the front of the engine for 3 or 4 minutes. This happened in the middle of a ski session. It ran perfectly after this incident, charging normally. Is this an indication that the alternator is going bad? It is the original and I have 1100 hours on the boat. Thanks.

Unless your alternator decided to take its vacation as a coffrr grinder it sounds like the bushinging on it are going. Take it to a rebuilder and he should be able to replace them for around $50.

To second Rick's thoughts, get the alternator to a shop for new bearings. The grinding noise was a warning and be thankful it did not decide to go belly-up while you were on the water, you rarely get two chances.

On the other hand, if you trust your battery to get you home and want to mess up what could have been a great day on the lake, see how far you can push it.
