I have an above ground 13,000 gal. pool. With a doughboy sand filter . My problem is that while I'm vacuming the pool , all of the algea is coming right back in through the inlet hose into the pool . I had 100lbs. of sand in which 50 was new last year and 50 this year .
please help if you can . The family of 6 will apreciate it very much .
thanks.

Hey Pat, maybe I can help but its been about 20 years since I had a 24' above ground pool.
Algea is a mess, you have to shock it with chemicals and kill it and it will all fall to the bottom. Then like you stated you have to vacume it off the bottom.
I guess I musta had a doughboy sand filter also and it would be jetting green algea right into the pool also.
But their is a powder that you add to the skimmer and it makes a cake ontop of the sand and traps the algea while vacuming but the pressure of vacuming drops off and you have to backwash and start all over again and that is a pain.
or you can set the valve to vacume the algea to the ditch, but you will have to keep a hose with runnin water in the pool to keep up with the water you are taking out cause you will lose your vacume, and then add more chemicals to balance the water out that you are puttin in. but you will vacume out way faster than you can put in, another pain.
What I did was buy a DA {cartrige} filter and install it in line on the outside of the pool between the skimmer and the sand filter leaving it in there permanant and it would pickup all the algea without spitting it back into the pool,
then shut everything off and pull the cartrige filter out and wash it off insert it back and your good to go...... Then under normal use that cartrige filter will keep that pool crystal clear.
hope this helps

Pat,
I use a DE filter and the DE earth is much finer than a sand filter so nothing can pass through and back into the pool. I think Root is on the right track with a cartridge, I'd call the local pool guy and see what they say. Vacuuming to waste will work but you'll empty the pool before it's clean
There's also a chemical that will kill the algea so it falls to the bottom and can be vacuumed pretty quickly, good luck, pools are a hassle but once you figure them out you can't live without it.

Pat, Alan is right, it was called a DE
was close on the name for how long ago it was. Theirs probably better filters out by now but that cartrige filter solved the problem

Thanks guys . I will be checking on some cartrige filters. I did look on that pool sight, and they gave me some ideas to check first . Hopefully I can figure this out soon ,so I can get back to working on the boat ,which isnt going so good right now .

A pool? For what....warming up the boat for oil-changes? Had an above the ground 20 years ago...nothing but trouble. Finally some neighborhood kids helped me out by filling it full of BB holes to drain it. Good ridance.

These cartridge filters , are they a smaller item or is it the whole large unit?
Do you guys have a link or some pics?

Pat,
I'm not too sure about the cartidges Root is refering to. I think it depemds on what type of filter you have, Not sure if they make a cartridge for a sand filter or not. I would get the make and model number off your filter and call someone like http://www.intheswim.com/ - In The Swim . They may have some suggestions.
I have a DE (Diatomacious Earth) Filter not a sand fitler and the DE is very fine like flour. Nothing gets by it and keeps the pool drinking water clear all summer.
Also if your trying to suck out green algea then you should kill it first. Ask them for an Algae destroyer and they'll need to know what type of filter you use and wether the pools filled with tap or well water. Kill it first then vacuum.
Your end solution may be to just vacuum to waste instead of back to the pool, so start filling that sucker to the top.
Jbears right, pools can be a pain but once you get it figured out there's nothing better than dippin with momma after the kids go to bed.

one day this summer while the mercury was hovering around the 100 mark my son wanted to go swimming. no problem, pull out the dump trailer, seal the tailgate with great stuff and throw the garden hose over the side. wait 3 hours and you have a white trash mobile swimming pool.

If you read the thread carefully, you will see I was simply helping Joel out who had a problem posting the picture.

Gary,
It has come up though the years where I'm asked if there's any connection with the town. The answer is no and it's spelled with a "e" and not a "a".
Halston,
I understand and you're cool. I guess I shouldn't be as sensitive but the last time it happened, it was a intentional slam with someone going after me.

Owning a swimming pool is one thing but maintaining it is a totally different ball game.Unless you have an automatic pool cleaner, you need to manually vacuum your pool.Use a manual brush and pool vacuum on all areas of the walls and floor at least once a week. I also have installed recently above ground pool situating it in my garage.I read out interesting and informative ideas. This will be helpful for me.Thanks everyone...
