Hello all. At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, what is the correct timing procedure for a 1993 Ski Nautique with the basic 351 PCM. I am new to the boating repair thing and just want to do this right. I noticed no advance outside of the dist, so I believe it is internal with springs or something? does this have to be disabled like a vac advance? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

no vaccum advance on boats. Hook a timing light up and go to town. place the trigger lead on the front cyl on the drivers side and set it at 8 btdc. unless it the protec and then you cannot adjust timing.

With my motor mostly stock (only a DUI ignition upgrade), my boat ran well at 14 degrees initial. I think the stock recommendation is 8-10 degrees.

Maybe, maybe not. It was available in '91 but I have seen base 351w's as late as '94 that were basic 240hp reverse rotation motors, and did not have Protec.

I do have the reverse rotation 240. Nothing fancy as far as upgrades. Just did a carb rebuild and tune-up and wanted to check the timing. But being a car guy, no advance threw me off.

Why is the motor reverse rotation? I thought the pcm 1.23 trans reversed the prop?

It does. He must have a 240hp reverse rotation and 1:1. My friend has a '94 with that combo, as does Randy in Ohio.

Do ypur plug wires come out of the distr. cap?
If yours don't and come from the rear out of 4 coil packs then it is pro tec.
Which calls for 18degrees BTDC @ 700 RPM
you have to also un hook the knock sensor which is located in the rear of passenger side head(green wire I think)
Should also check at3600RPM for total advance of 30 degrees BTDC
Good luck Munday

It has the 1:1 tranny. The wires do come out of the cap. I put the timing to 10 BTC @ 750 RPM's. Seems to run real good there. Going out to the lake tomorrow. Hope it stays running good? Thanks for all the advice! You guys seem to know your stuff...

should be 600 rpm in gear.
FYI you cannot adjust timing on the protec system it uses a crank sensor to fire and the advance and timing are comtroled by the electronics.
