There was talk at Green Lake about another run at Shelbyville. First or second weekend after labor day came up as a possible date. We'd be open for either and would probably do the same as last year, camp friday and saturday night.

We could have a pretty good gathering of fans. I talked to Stang, Brian, Rob L, Joel and Todd and time permitting are all in. Brian said he'd bring out the Carver again. Anybody is welcome.

Let's see if we can set a date.

Anything after Labor Day looks good.

Alan, I still have one of your cutting board skis that hopefully I can have replicated by it's drowning anniversary. I was way out of my league attempting a grasshopper with his custom made shoe skis on my hands. One came off and I couldn't get out of the toe hold in time to grab it before she went down.

I've been searching gratch' sales for authentic cutting boards but can't find any. Even contemplated stealing my grandmother's. Might break down and just buy some low density plastic and see if I can get them some extra bouyancy. My biggest problem has been finding a matching pair of white rubber toe holds. Still haven't figured out that damn flip turn ski either, only tried it out one day and gave up in a hurry.

Shelbyville was a nice relaxing weekend of boating. I'm still sore from GL and have been falling asleep at the wheel all week.

Kevin,

I've been looking for an old set of combos to strip and make another pair. I'm kinda itching to get on the shoes. Most shoes skis I've seen that use the plastic have foam wrapped around the straps and that must keep them afloat. I also need a step off ski, haven't run into anything at yard sales lately so if you run across something cheap keep me in mind.

Now as for Reids in August, please keep me up to date as I have this urge to head that way. I don't know how I'd pull that off but I'm going to work on it. You guys flying, driving, pulling a boat?

Flying, to maximize time with the NC gang. Friday night August 3rd ~7pm chicago-charlotte, flying back Monday, August 6th ~9am. We want to maximize our time at the Pinkham compound.

I was going to put trimmed down handle floats on the ankle straps. That should keep them up. I'm all about the old ski equipment, constantly pulling stuff out of the garbage that the show team throws out. Last week I got about 200' of green tac line one of the boats ran over. SCORE! I even learned how to make real loops as well. If I find any good drop skis I'll bring them along. Haven't found any gems along the side of the road yet this season.

Paul, I have an old wooden 69" jumper that's cracked down the middle that should hold 5-6 shots on it comfortably. I need to go shopping for grommets and shot glasses now. If you need bigger than that you'll have to go drop $1k on one of those carbon fiber 90" jump skis Krueger and them boys are stomping over 200' on.

As I am not familiar with the area what is shelbyville close to. Please excuse the dumb question, but I would really like to go if I can fit it in.

It's about 4 hours south of Chicago. About 2 hours south of Bloomington/Normal, maybe 1 hour south of Decator. Here's an area map: http://www.eaglecreekresort.com/directions.php - Shelby

Shelbyville is BIG WATER. It's Illinois' best shot at a lake like Powell. We had horrible weather the whole time and still found a nice still spot to set in the course both days (in 50+ ft of water). The lake is so big that it's very easy to get lost once you get out!

Does not matter when....I'm down man!

There will be plenty of boats...if it's easier not to trail one...just drive down anyway! Nobody gets left on shore!

Steve ...the water temp will be warmer than it was at GL...usually early Sept here is very nice weather wise! Glad your comming!

Paul???? Do it bro! 6 hrs...is a cakewalk!

Reid...look at the map...if you go to GL during that time and trail your boat home you can go right down through central Illinois...6 hours from GL...and I think 12-13 hrs to your pad!

Joel...did ya have that baby yet?(well, not you...I mean Beth...you know what I mean)

Let's try to nail a weekend down.

It would be either Sept 8-9 or sept 15-16

Please list which weekend will be best for you or Either if it doesn't matter. We'll see what works for most and go from there. Use the quote feature so we can keep it all together. thanks

The big resort down there is Eagle Creek resort. I've stayed there twice now, but never again. This resort's glory days are long over. It looks to me like it was a great resort when they built it (probably late-80's) but they haven't upgraded a single thing since then. The staff/service is generally awful. I don't know what kind of Kool-aid the staff is on but it's like everyone is just a little off. As for the facilities, if it's not dirty, it's run down. I'd avoid this resort at all costs. My apologies if this offended anyone.

On the plus side, they have wonderful docks for your boat, but be careful as it's very shallow around the docks and it's all rock on the bottom.

Not to mention you have to swerve back to the other side fo the lake. How long of a drive was it Joel? It's very dark once the sun goes down too, best bet is sit around the camp fire and knock out some MGDs, Coors Light, or any one of those Bud products you can choke down. Alan's got the LCD with DVD player, and Joel's got the video covered. If the Weitekamps are there you'll be blown away by their camping abilities, they live better under a tent than the entire population of some countries.

Mojo, everyone stayed at Wolf Creek. They have an "outstanding" boat ramp there- just about the biggest boat ramp I've ever seen. We launched 3 boats simultaneously, with plenty of room. Campgrounds seemed very nice and I think everyone was happy with the place.

Looks like we should set it at the 8-9 then. Hope all who are questionable with that weekend have the opportunity to adjust their schedules and no one gets left out.

That's about the extent of my planning, we'll show up sometime friday and set up camp probably in the same location as last year. We'll try to grab as many spots in one area as we can but we certainly had our pick of the park last year.

I wasn't following this thread as I figured it was too far too soon again for us. But Alan, you SHOULD cruise on down to NC in the Bounder, as we've got full hook-ups for you right there on the property. Gary, our return trip is still up in the air, but we were looking at late August originally, and possibly one trip for a weekend of fun, and then another a little later to hit it once more and then bring it back. I could spend a whole summer in that place and yet I still didn't see it all yet. I'll be sure and follow up.

Yet us know when you trail it back....I don't think you would add much more than an hour to you trip home if you came though central Illinois....a stop at lake Shelbyville might be a good stop over point...perhaps a few of us nearby and anyone who missed thed first one could see you there! That lake is at it's best in the fall...all 26 miles of it! A mini mini reunion???

GL to shelbyville is going to be about 6.5 hours. 11.5 hours from there to Mooresville.

Anyway...it's good having options !

Gary, Looks like a plan to me. If I can get one visit back to GL prior to the return, then on the return trip we can just fly in, hook up and go straight down to Shelbyville. Is the lake iced over by late August?

The entire month of Sept is very nice boating weather...water temp is warm enough for the Boat Doc!By mid Oct it starts to get chilly.

The poop on Shelbyville...weekend traffic is high with all the large boats out(roller city)early A.M. is ok...week days calm. The last big outing for most boaters there is...Labor day. After that ....it's like everyone is done for the season...and things are quiet.

Gary, If we take this route, can we get a spot at that campground as well I guess? If we can do this trip, which I wholeheartedly plan to do, we'll be flying blind w/o normal planning so we'll need your input. Thanks.

Dave, Eagle Creek isn't that bad. It's just not great. It's about a 5/10 if you ask me. It was probably spectacular when it first opened. The service is bad, the food is bad, and the place could be kept up better but it's not horrible. Certainly tolerable for a 2 night stay, without a doubt. If it's the only place, then I'd say do it. It's about a 10 minute drive from Wolf Creek and probably a 5 mile boat ride or so. Again, top notch docking system. The docks there probably cost millions of dollars- they are designed to float up at least 20 feet higher if need be, which is pretty neat.

Reid...much of that depends when you are traveling! If after labor day...things are quiet and camping spots are drive in and pick one. Mid to lat Sept ...trees are turning colors!
I don't spend much time there until fall...so I am not sure about late Aug. I do know the lake is busy then. I can surely find out for you...as for us, we are in Minn for a couple weeks in Aug back by the 25th or 26th.After that we have nothing scheduled for weeks!
If you have some dates you think you will be traveling...run them by me and I can get info together and make sure camping spots are available!
We have several members within a couple hrs of the lake or closer...should be able to have a small group and a few boats! Brian and Deb are my nieghbors...it takes no arm twisting to get them out for a day or two on the lake!
Anyway....we would love to host things for you here!

The last time I was on Shelbyville which was over 15yrs ago, the water was so high we launched our boats in the turnaround at the top of the hill from the launch ramp because that's how high the water was, at least 20ft above normal.

Dave,

It's a bit of a drive, about 20mi IIRC, but right at the exit off I65 there is a Holidome, or at least there was when we use to go down there, that is where we always stayed.

And you wouldn't need a boat as Nautique John has us covered with two 196s and several really nice BFNs. If you could pull it off............

Reid, I was holding off replying to your post because up until this morning I was still in the running to make it out there. I've taken 3 long weekends in a row with the kids and I'm so far behind at work it'll be a miracle if I could get away again.   I put my daughter on a plane back home this morning so it's time for me to get serious at work. I do appreciate the offer though and will take you up on it in the future.

I even map quested the trip last night, Big Rock to NC 843 miles, NC to Boston to to pick up my son,863 miles, Boston to maine for the reunion 150 miles, back to Boston and then home another 1160 miles. If I could have put 10 days together I could have made it work.

Renee and I are in. I think either of the weekends will work out. If we have something going on one day we will make it the next. No problem! We will surely have our boat there too. I would prefer the 8-9th.

We get a kick out of the camping comments. I guess everytime I camped as a kid it rained or the tent was set up over a rock pile. So when we got our camping gear, we decided to get all the goodies and make it enjoyable which it really is. I liked the campground we were at last year. We had tornado warnings and rain, but the trees were so thick that we hardly had wind and never got "wet".

I agree that Eagle Creek is not a 4 star hotel. I have stayed there for business and it is comperable to a super 8. I think you pay for the other features like a nice bar and restaurant. I know I am potched and tired when i get off the water so I really don't care what the rest of the room is like. Crapper and a bed are the essentials.

There is a hotel in Shelbyville if I remember right, but other than Eagle Creek and this possible one in Shelbyville, you have to drive 30+ miles to get a hotel. Gary will have to chime in on this one. He is closer. I never go to Shelbyville. I am either going to Mill Creek which is AWESOME or Clinton which is toasty warm water and calm.

Long story short, put us down Alan!

Well, we drove down to the campground just to make our reservations and we took some notes on which spots are good and which aren't. Basically looking at parking and such. Renee is going to work on uploading a campground map with the notes on it. We liked our location and reserved for $20. Alan, your spot is #61 IF you want the same spot for the Bounder.

Normally, I wouldn't think that spots will be hard to come by, but being right after labor day and decent weather, there will be more campers there than last year. FYI, there were a fair amount of campers this weekend.

Will keep you posted, but we are definitely locked in now!

What's the water level like at Shelbyville? I personally haven't been there, but earlier this summer I heard the water levels were very low.

Of those going, how many have kids that would also go? That might be a make or break for me if I can't sell it to the family as a "fun for everyone" event. Is there a beach area for the kids? accessable by boat?

Posted By: weitekampt
Date Posted: August-13-2007 at 11:03am
I must admit, I am a foreigner to Shelbyville. It is a lake I don't go to due to travel distance. When we were there yesterday to check out the campgrounds and such, we commented on the lake looking low. If it was low earlier this summer, it is going to be lower yet! We haven't gotten much rain at all down that direction. So to answer your first question, I would say it is quite low.

About the beach situation, I am not sure of. I know there is a beach area, but it is bouyed off and no boats can "beach" themselves. I didn't see any docks or facilities like that. Again, this is only in one area and we are generally on the far side of the lake skiing and hanging out. I don't know if somebody else more familiar with the lake can help with this or not. I am sure we could find a spot that is shallow for the kids.

Gary and lisa brought their kids last year. There were only a few of us in '06 but yes there were a few young ones there. I am not sure what the real head count is and what the family status is. I usually act like a kid!

Hope this helps a bit and maybe some others can chime in. I am really looking forward to the weekend!

Also, noticed the announcement in Waterski magazine for the NE reunion! Great job Keith! Word is getting out!

Reidp: are you still planning on making it to Shelbyville? I re-read the posts and you were concerned about camping spots. Don't worry about it. In just the one campground there is over 100 sites and there are another 110 or so in the other. Almost all of them can accomodate RV's too.

Sure would like to have you guys in Illinois. We are looking at possibly 15 groups making the trip! This should be upgraded from "mini reunion" to "big bash"!

Just talked to the campground and he said for our weekend not to worry about getting sites as there will be plenty. Here is a link to the reservation page but it must be mailed in. http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/Programs/Camping/camp_app.htm - wolf creek I'm going to mail in and reserve the site we had last year site 61 (thanks Todd) and he said 63 was already reserved so I'm guessing thats Todd and Rene. There is no site map on the internet so I can't help you there but last year there were plenty of sites right around us open.

IF all goes as planned we will be getting in thursday night after work and I'll stake claim to as many sites as we need come friday am so let me know who needs one and I'll do what I can to keep us all together.

Another thing that could be fun is for everyone to bring whatever ski gear they have, you know the stuff you haven't used for years. Like zip sleds, (raindog). I have an old set of tricks I'll bring. A couple knee boards could be fun. If I don't find some old shoes skis by then I'm going to buy a set. We definately need a whole mess of combos so we can kill ourselves building some pyramids. That's what the kids are for, they're good climbers. Maybe someone has an airchair?

Bring it all and we'll have a blast.

Alan, I love your thinking. We built some pyramids at Quinner's on Saturday. Hopefully he'll post a picture or two. It was a lot of fun, followed by pain the next few days. I really should have some new shoes for you by then.

After watching back barefoot lines this weekend, I'm even more pumped to learn that damn flip turn ski.

We're going kneeboarding this saturday!

As far as low water levels in Shelby, we were deploying the course in 50+ feet of water so a few feet here or there won't hurt anything. We had to add rope extensions to the course because it was so deep!

Hollywood does not feel nearly as skinny as he looks while standing on your shoulder or falling on your thigh, ouch!! Still a little tired today, will post the pic's tonight. Last night Booby and I Tried some flip turns on his backwards kick ski (old jumper w/bindings reversed), close but no cigar. I am pretty sure there is a pair of shoe ski's in my basement, will see if I can dig them up.

Talked to Chris yesterday that's where I got the idea. Said you guys had a blast. We used to build Pyramids all the time, it's lot of fun to just goof off instead of hard core skiing especially when we've got 2 days on the water to kill. Forgot you still had that flip turn, bring it out and we'll master it or use it for firewood.

Low end kneeboard - Check
Hyperlite Roam 144 cm wakeboard- Check

Its cool that Shelbyville is gearing up to be about behind the boat instead of the boat itself.

This is starting to sound like our family gathering last july 4th. Our theme was "retro" and we dug out all the old wood skis that us kids learned on, the ol' Mike Sauderhound wood slalom, and of course the wooden disk with the lawn chair!

I think we are going to have a blast. There is a area of the campground where we would all be close together, but that would put us next to the campground host.

Renee and I were staining the deck till dark so I don't think we will get the map with notes posted. Sorry, but will work on that soon.

I talked to the campground yesterday asking about reservations and he said don't worry there will be plenty of spots. I did send in mine anyway so we can have the same campsite we had last year as that seemed to work out pretty good. We're also right next to Todd and Renee.

Like I stated above, If anyone that wants a site just lets me know before that weekend we plan on heading up thursday after work and Friday morning I can get with the site host and hold as many sites we need as close together as possible.

I was a wet mutt for sure, Doc.

No hounds in the household for us. Wife is very allergic to them and cats too.

Rain Dogs is one of my favorite albums by Tom Waits. He said it referred to stray dogs that got lost in the city when the rain washed away their scents. For days and days, they would wander around, sniffing and looking for a way back home.

That's the way I feel when I boat (or formally motorcycle). I intentionally get lost and slowly make my way back home again.

Great news Ken. I'm hoping you have a surfboard and wouldn't mind giving a couple of lessons at some point. I'd love to give it a try, but that probably isn't going to happen behind my SNOB.

The kids are 14 and 10 - both wakeboard.

No problem on getting a surf board, I can bring a Walker Project or a Phase Five. More than happy to take ya out and give you a few pointers.

Didn't even think about it, but if there's a particular wakeboard that anyone would like to demo, (our shop carries Ronix, Gator, and Slingshot) I'd be more than happy to bring a few setups.

Hey Ken,
Is there a beginner wake board you'd recommend for a fat 230 lb 45 year old?? The ones I have I think are too agressive.. At 6' is there a particular length available that I should be looking at???

Thanks

Moj,

Ken's in the business I'm not. I'm also not very familiar with the brands he carries.

However, I would offer that the Hyperlite Motive has always been a great board for beginners through advanced intermediates. Easy to ride, very forgiving. It can also be found at a pretty good price on the net. You could get away with a 140 Motive, but they make a 144 which is a really big, really easy to ride board, especially for those of us above 225 lbs.

My wife has a 128 version of this board, and my brother has a 144.

Edit: The brands Ken carries are great. I just haven't ridden them myself. BKH
