I have a 1980 Ski Nautique that I have been working on for some time now and I am just about to take it to the lake for a test run and now I do not have any spark. I just put all new gages and new plugs,wires,cap,rotor,points,resistor and coil. It had spark before I put in the new gages and now nuthing. The coil has power and I do not know what could be wrong. when you were replacing guages, did you bump the kill switch on the dash? ------------- bill |

First, make sure your wiring resembles whats on the diagram www.abbysenior.com/mechanics/ignition.htm
Inspect the wiring, points are clean and gapped correctly, cam lobes are good, check voltage at the coil while cranking (12VDC)& approx 9VDV with ignition sw on, check for spark at the coil wire (removed from cap and placed close to ground & make sure you are clear of any ignitions source i.e. gasoline) by opening and closing the points manually with the ignition on, check spark at the plug wires by connecting a spare spark plug and grounding it while cranking the engine. IF you still haven't figure out what the problem is, start over, you missed something. |

well maybe he should ditch the points for a real ignition system or maybe spark the points to charge the system or fix the wires that are crossed in the system. And maybe not do so many electrical changes at once.

So it cranks fine but no spark? And when you say there is power at the coil, can you get spark from the coil lead as Jag suggests? Also, you say you put in a new resistor, I assume you mean ballast resistor, but I don't see that you replaced the condensor.
If you have power at the coil primary, but no spark from the coil lead when you open the points, you may have a bad coil. First replace the condensor, then the coil. ------------- '63 American Skier - '98 Sport Nautique |

waste of time, spark the points a couple of times to seat them and instal the cap, set dwell and timing and be done with it. Same crap we had to do to Jbear's ride. Chris: Boat was running bad in Tennessee...had to replace those springs in the bottom of the distributor. Someday I'll move up...when you are down here betwween jobs so you can do it right for me.
