ok, so i bought an 1982 Ski Nautique 2001. I took it to the lake today and it was running great, cranks up everytime very easily. I rode it around for about an hour, and when coming back in when i switched it to neutral it makes this grinding noise, exactly the sound of grinding gears in a standard truck. It only makes this noise in neutral, not forward or reverse. Anybody have this problem or know where i need to start?

also, some of my friends want to take it out in the morning. Is this a bad idea? Could I possibly mess it up more?

sounds like you need a $4000.00 rebuild...
JK your damper plate probably needs to be replaced, it costs about 90 bucks and is bolted to your flywheel, its not a good idea to keep running it, if your car was knocking would you keep driving it?
does the noise go away with rpm? if so it is your damper, but your planetaries are turning in nuetral too that is a possibility but i doubt it, go after the damper first and make sure you check the alignment, by the way rebuilds arent that expensive

BTW, dont dis-appoint your buddies, if the noise goes away in nuetral i would take it out....make sure you bring a paddle with you, after today it does need attention though

actually the only time the noise ever gets made is when the boat is in neutral. When it is in reverse and drive the boat drives perfectly. The noise is only being made while in neutral. Is this still going to be the damper plate?

Is this the same damper plate that you are suggesting might need to be put in?

Do not go to Skidim because they don't handle the good Sachs plate. Do a search for it. Even better, let your friends use they boat and trash it ! They can then pay for a plate and a trans rebuild.
