I grew up on Candlewood lake in CT. I would like to plan a trip back to my old home lake. My 20th reunion is being held next summer. I Have heard from old friends how the lake has changed. Any one local and can give me a real heads up on the lake? Is there a speed limit now? Have the noise police been as bad as I have heard. My wife and I vacationed in New Milford about 7 years ago. We and a couple I've known for years spent two days on the lake. But apparently things have changed for the worse.

Any help or local input would be great.

I live in CT and will not boat on Candlewood during the weekend. There are too many ocean capable vessels on that lake for my comfort seeing as I have a low freeboarded 17'9" 1978 SN. Plus the people on there are not the most experienced boaters. (No offence to those that are on Candlewood and are good boaters)

I bought my boat with a friend that grew up on Candlewood and it was his intention to use the boat there. I took him to the lake that I like and now we ski there and he even wants to buy a house there.

We also have a friend that's a lake cop on candlewood. We've taken him to our lake and he was impressed with the boaters out there and the lake itself.

Oh there is a speed limit now and he does ticket for that.

Scott,

Where did you grow up in Ct? My family has had a house on Candlewood since 1947, Holiday Point in Sherman, spent every summer there growing up. There is no question the lake has developed and gotten busier over the years however it is not much different from any other large busy lake and in some respects I think better as it is well patrolled plus they now have the licensing requirements for the PWC's and Boats. If you want to ski good water you need to get up early, sometimes you can catch good water again at the end of the day or at the end of certain fingers of the lake, typically the north ends/fingers are quieter. As I am sure you know it is a beautiful Lake and if cruising is also something you enjoy there is plenty of that available. Some of the high traffic areas can get a bit treacherous in an older or smaller inboard.

Chris, I'm just curious. I could understand why in some cases a smaller boat would be a problem but you have mentioned the older boats too. Could you explain what your thoughts are?

I'd call candlewood lake one of my "home" lakes too. I don't live on it, but a lot of my friends from the lake live there. We got our 216 from candlewood east (barf) and my friend got his 211 from there as well. We know another friend who is a member also at the club and got his 210 from as well. What I'm trying to say is there will DEFINATELY be someone out to take you for a ride if you plan to visit sometime...

During the summer, the weekends on the lake are useless. That's when we trailer about 10 mins longer and go to a small part of the ct river, Lake Lillinonah. Its extremely calm 90% of the time and most of the boats are wakeboard or ski boats... very few a**holes...

BTW, where exactly did you grow up, scott? My friends house is part of Candlewood Heights in New Milford

I grew up in New Milford. Perry Dr to be exact just down the road from Marineland. Thanks for the input guys. It really doesn't sound much different from my last visit. If I make the trip I plan on bringing my boat. That way early morning through the week the lake is mine. We may do some weekend cruising but skiing would probably be out. Anyone for lunch at the Hatch? I am familiar with the river and Lake Lillinonah but I have never boated either. A good friend lives in Bridgewater just a minute from the river.

Chris what do you consider a high traffic area? We used to hang out around Rock and Cedar islands in and around the cove. Where are the weekend hot spots now?

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Scott,

Generally the further south the busier it gets, the pass around Sand Island has always been pretty crazy. Not sure on the hot spots, more and more people come up to the Sherman end and tie off these days, the cliffs and rope swing are always pretty busy as well, there has always been alot of boats hanging at the bay by either Little Neck or Candlewood shore and of course Down the Hatch is a great place to stop off. Isn't that crazy Goose or Swan shaped boat moored at Marineland?

Hopefully we will get back east next summer at some point, if we are there at the time of your visit would definitely hook up with you for a ski, beer or both.

Pete,

Don't get me wrong, old is cool, just like us!
My older boat comment was more a reference to smaller craft, nothing to do with age really. Having only owned Ski Nautique’s the older they were the rougher they rode in heavy chop, perhaps with other models that is not the case, heck you made it across GL in the Atom at the reunion, quite a feat in itself.

Chris, Don't worry as I did not take you wrong. I pretty much knew that you were refering to the rough water but didn't know if there was something else. Yes, GL was the roughest water my Atom has ever seen!! You may have noticed that my wife Diane had to sit in the back where it was smoother riding. Earlier in the day we had been out for a short run and the rough ride had hurt her neck!

haha, how did i know you'd say something

The river consists of Lilinonah and Zoar. I've been on Zoar once and had a great time because i was meeing some new people with a friend, but besides that, its very narrow at parts and has a lot of shallow areas that leave the safe passages very narrow.

I agree in that the more southern you go the crazier it gets, thats where 3 major marina's are, Candlewood east, Echo bay, and brookfield bay. Gerards keeps the north populated, but for the most part, the New Milford "finger" is smaller has more small coves to go in and out of. There is a nice hidden rope swing there that not many people know about, not many in comparision to chicken rock, that is.

If/when you come, DONT launch at Lattins cove. the ramp is free, but replacing your prop wont be. If i wanted to be cynical (sp?) for a sec, I'd say OJ Props and Acme pay our DEP under the table to keep the ramp the way it is, leaving it extremely shallow and filled with nicely sized rocks. If you come, befriend Candlewood east so they let you use their new ramp, or drive up the lake road a couple miles and use teh brookfield town launch. it is free or 10 bucks, depending if a person is there or not. But its the best ramp on the lake and definately worth the money...

It could be the point that HW was making to you Austin is bad mouthing dealers is really in poor taste, particularly those that support and sponsor this site, or even if they don't, maybe your beef is legit but maybe it is not, it just strikes me a bit odd that you now are negative towards another dealer.

quinner, generally speaking, you are correct. But with all due respect, you (general you) dont know them all that well with respect to their relationship with my family. I really dont think I was even badmouthing them; I said one small little word with, totally meaningless in context. And anyway, compared to how much they've badmouthed my family publically, I honestly don't respect those people at candlewood east at all. Its one thing to have financial disputes with dealers and each agree to discontinue doing business with each other, but I know for a fact that this dealer has ridiculed my family to its employees, us, and to other customers. Their sales dept is amazing, but they are known in the area for having extremely poor (and expensive) service.

anyway... c'mon, you guys are smart and we're all friends (for the most part, i think), one word is suddenly badmouthing? its really not a big deal...

we should be talking about candlewood lake here, not a specific club on it.... btw, weren't you planning on visiting this summer quinner? when do you think you'll make it back again

Austin, that one little 4 letter word when used by HW was enough to get a reaction out of you, furthermore your issue is badmouthing, is that not the majority of the context within your above post or your signature on PN? Sometimes the better or bigger individual in a dispute just takes the high road, perhaps that would be the best approach for you in this case starting by deleting or editing your above post.

The kid used to have Candlewood East in his signature, and then once they got "dropped" is now apparently bitter about it. I'm sure they are quite happy with the current situation and don't have to deal with all your crap anymore.

You are a total hypocrite. We WERE talking about the lake then you stepped in and badmouthed a dealer out of nowhere. No we don't know your history with them, so slamming them is completely uncalled for.

Get a life dude, you were the guy that always took the ball and went home when he did not hit a home run..........
Hate to see you cop that attitude ," this straightforwardness and honesty of mine has caused me enough trouble here..."
The site will survive and we will find someone else that has a ball,so the game will continue even after your gone.
We hate to lose any of our Fans here, and the bashing you got is trivial to say the least ,look at the crap some members have gone thru and they did not pout or threaten to jump ship..............

hw... that wasnt bashing, i'm going to stick by that... trust me in that if i could write a propperly-formatted essay on ceast and what i find wrong with them.

look at it like this, in a relatively happy tone, i initially mentioned 3 people that bought boats from them, 1 of which is a member of their club. one might conclude from this that ceast is a dealer that is relatively successful--by mentioning their name, high sales, and fun my friends and i have on their lake, i am giving them free advertising. im giving the public a false sense of satisfaction with the dealer. in fact, not one of us is satisified with them! even the freind who works there, and his family, who is family friends with the owner, is not happy with their service... thus, the "barf" comment really just balances out the positive stuff in the rest of the sentence... so its all fair and balanced, fox news
