Im doing a 4.3 chevy, this guy religously changed his oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles, the truck has 194000 miles on it and the number 6 rod started to rap, which is pretty common on these engines. I tore the heads off and pushed the pistons out, I ran a dal bore gauge down each hole because i was going to have it bored to the next size. the spec was 4.00 and every one of these cylinders was at 4.00. it was hard to believe, there was no sludge build up, no scuffing on the squirts of the piston. a crank kit and new rings and the engine is like new. the moral of the story.... im going to change my oil more often and the non believers like me may change thier minds

no chevys use so much oil you just change the filter, because your always putting in new oil. I am just kidding nothing wrong with a chevy. A little ford chevy humor.

I've had always changed my oil at 3000 and the engines have always outlasted the vehicle.
However, a few years ago I started using Amsoil and now I only change the oil once a year, whether it has 5000 on it or 20,000. I've got a '96 Suburban that I switched over 6 years ago and it has 175k on it and it uses about 1 qt in 12,000 miles. My '05 Silverado with a 5.3 didn't use any oil during the past 12 months and I put 15k on it.
It costs $75+- for an oil change, but it is cheaper in the long run, and it saves time.
The guy that talked me into this says Amsoil is far superior to dino, although he recommends oil changes every 6 months regardless of mileage.
I wouldn't do this in my boat, but it seems to be the way to go in the cars.

If you like amsoil I would suggest you look into royal purple. It's good stuff ran it in my powerstroke and it picked up between 1-2 mpg depending on what I was doing.
I have always changed my oil at 3000 miles as well. Except in my lease truck it gets the oil chnaged at 7500 miles as the manufacturer says that is exceptable.

i still will stick to the 5 to 10k rule,
I expected this engine to be wiped and everything was in great shape and in part I really think it had something to do with the frequent oil changes. the guy is a fanatic and decided to buy a brand new 4.3, he has a tendnecy to go overboard on this truck
