Ryan, It's been awhile since I've used the crimping and beading machine and thought of you for help since it's your trade. I'm laying out a duct transition from a 4.5" x 18.5" to a 12" round. How much material do I need to add for the bead on the round collar end? The transition is for the discharge of a in-line blower. The factory does offer a transition to a 10" round but that puts my static up in the .25" range. I want to bring it down to .1"

Peter,if you want to you can go to any sheet metal shop and ask them to custom make the piece.Just as long as you give them the exact measurements that you need.It will say you time and hassle in the end. Most shops can make that in a day.

Thanks Brian but I have access to the equipment (hasn't been used in many years) and material so I thought I would say some money. The last custom transition I had made was about $150! So, how much material do I need for the bead?

Peter I wish I could tell you how much you need.I apologise for not knowing, most of my HVAC that I do I don't get into the tin bending end of it.I just measure it up and have a shop do it.Its my experience that tin bending is an art and if you don't do it all the time you never really get good at it.

8122- sorry never noticed your question until today..an inch and ahalf..when you layout your piece on the round end add 1-1/2"..the 1/2" will be your bead and the 1" is your collar...the bead is 1/2"..you can make the raw as long as youd like but standards are 1"

remeber to put the pipe into the bead machine and tighten until its snug, then tighten one turn..start then make small incriments so it doesnt distort..if you tighten too much it will cut through your metal

Ryan, Thanks for your generous offer but I've got it all layed out with the exception of the allowance for the bead. I'm going to make a cardboard template before I start cutting any sheet metal just to make sure I didn't make any mistakes on the drawing board. (It must be nice for the shops that had a CAD program for this!) I'll make the collar first just to get the feel of running the bead again. The transition bead I know is tougher due to the angles that intersect the bead. I kept the length relatively long for good air flow plus it's easier to make with the shallower angles. OK, 1/2" for the bead! Thanks again
