What's the latest? You haven't posted anything lately. Is the Atlanta area still going to have any water?

You mean what used to be Lake Lanier? Lanier at full pool is about 1071 & I just checked the corp website & yesterday it was at 1051. The recored low before this was around 1052.7. The worst part is it is still dropping since we are getting NO rain. The lake will take several years to come back unless we have a tropical storm or something come through. I haven't been up there to take any pictures lately, but maybe Buffalo Greg has some since he is on the lake. I will try to go up & take some this weekend if I can.

Found some pictures on Flickr that others had taken. Here is a link. There are more pictures of the lake back past the tubers!

What's the real estate market like on that lake. Have prices dropped?

I'm not sure which Greg you meant, but I can get some pics up soon. The lake hasn't seen these levels since it was being filled in the 50's. Sunken cars, boats, highways, and grandstands are showing themselves since the 50's as well.

Unfortunately but predictably, our elected officials have accomplished less than my cat has twards solving the tri-state water problems here. I've even lost some boxwoods in my landscape that have been there for 30+years...and they are hardy!

The latest is that some have started to look to the Tennesee river...

Both Gregs, Thanks for the update. WOW is correct! I have some friends in your area and haven't heard from them on how bad the problem is lately so you filled me in. Skicat Greg, the Flickr is interesting except for the idiot with all the tubing pictures. How many are needed to see some kids flopping around on a tube??

They're saying our 'dead pool' starts at 1039. Short of floating a barge in what's left of the lake, the water systems won't be able to pick up below this level as well...

There are a few higher end subdivisions that began construction before the drought and before the mortgage troubles that aren't finished or full to this point. I'm sure those builders are willing to negotiate. The other side of the market(existing homes) seems to be business as usual. By that, I mean I don't see many on the lake for sale.

Noone is happy about the situation; but almost to a man, people believe this is short-lived. There's a lot of money and influential people on the lake(especially on skicat's end) along with an active lake association, and tempers have been wearing thin for several years now. I don't think the break point is very far off...

All that said, I probably have a year to finish my engine and boat?!!?

Nope, it's not you HW. They're all being brought up to Lake Norman, and I know Greg nor Greg wants to here it, but our Lake has recovered completely and is already full again. It's actually 1.5' over the Duke Power targeted level and is higher than when everyone was here back last August. I'm feeling for you GA boys and wish I could divert some of our water your way. If yours isn't back up soon when the weather warms up, you know we've got room up here.

Lanier is at least moving in the right direction with the rain we have gotten lately. I don't think it will recover this year though unless we get a tropical storm or something come through. I was talking to a business associate this morning & he said the corp of engineers came by & cut about 6' off of some trees that were right behind his houseboat not long ago. He couldn't even get his boat out before that!

Mother nature must have it out for Lanier! Ether that or it's another project that the corp has screwed up! We were down the lowest in over 30 years in northern Wisconsin which was about a foot. Our chain of lakes is not a reservoir so there are strict summer low limits. We have had so much snow this winter that they have just opened the dam in anticipation of the spring thaw!

We need the rain, but keep that other crap that came through last night! Looks like a war zone downtown. I guess it will really look like a war zone after all of the angry SEC fans that won't get to see the rest of the games get through with the area! They moved the rest of the games to Ga Tech with no fans allowed except parents, news media, etc.

all the bad weather that we got out of the south last week should help Lake Erie out, the place where J-bear grew up skiing is about knee deep

Lake Norman lake levels:

This was near our low point. There was never nearly this much shoreline showing on the dock side, only about 20' out, where it falls off much steeper. We could still use our ramp but you had to drop the trailer tires off the end.

This was Aug 2007, when we had the CCFan gathering. Notice the angle on the walking plank going down to the floating dock. This was actually low for this time of the year as you can tell from the stain on the pilings.

3/01/08, two weeks ago, and again notice the angle of the ramp to the floating dock. This is about 3' higher than it was in the lowest-level top picture.

And now today, 3/16/08, again look at the ramp angle. Our water has risen 2' in just two weeks! Helped by 2" of rain just yesterday. The light brown you see in the water is from the high winds we've had lately churning up the bottom in the shallows. It's never as clear as many lakes, but we get 4'-6' of visibility when it's calm.

I'm confident 2-Gregs will be back boating sooner than later down in HotLanta.

All that lake level change is crazy. Us Midwesterners measure ours in inches, not feet!

I was up there today and couldn't believe the change. I haven't seen Lkn that high since fall of 06. MIL was up to full pond about a month ago and even Wylie is starting to look normal again. I think the mtns got a decent snow this year. We're still on water restrictions though, I can't water the lawn or wash my car in my driveway.

Here's an update. Lanier reached a low of just over 20' and we're now down 13.63'. While I wouldn't call it at a safe level for skiing quite yet(unless you know where the channels are), the fishermen are having a blast. They have been busy making secret charts of the black forrests!

This http://water.sam.usace.army.mil/lanfc.htm - graph tells the tale.

The water line was at the entrance to my slip not so long ago...

Here's a weekend summary on Lanier. The pic they used is from the boat ramp I use and that's my street on the right.

It was strange enough that I wasn't out there for the 'official' beginning of summer, but to only hear a few boats go by...

IS the whole nation in a drought! That is sad to see your lake dry and your property value down in flames. The pictures posted of my boat are on lake travis ,Tx and when we pulled the boat out to come home the trailer was off the end of the ramp, lake level was 863 normal is 881. Thats it for me for the rest of the year nearest ramp still in water is 53 miles one way. Ramp is closed at 662 and lake is at that level now.Too many people not enough water

Two Gregs,
Did Fay add some water to Lanier, or is it just too little to late. I thought I interpreted a chart showing where you were still about 15' low.

Up here on Norman, Fay dumped upwards of 12" of rain in 2 days and has raised the lake over 2' since Monday. And I don't report this to make the Georgia guys feel bad, but we're 6" over the target and just 18" below full pond, which would have the water over many docks and into yards. Current level, in comparison to the bottom picture I posted above, has our ramp down to the floating portion being almost completely level. The chart below shows lake levels on all the lakes on the chain here with most now above target level. Makes it nice for the remaining portion of the summer.

Reid,

Yes Fay did give us some good rain. We got back to about mid July levels with even a few ramps open. Full pool is about 1070' & now we are at 1055.7. I think we gained about 2' as well. Still pretty low, but we can at least get through Labor Day weekend!

Thanks for asking Reid! The papers say we got 2.5'...I'd put it at a fat 2'. The funny part is I thought we were only going to get the 'wind job', but we started getting rain when the storm was almost to Billy's house. It came around in a wierd way by what we consider normal here, but I haven't heard a soul fussing about it!

It's been a tough summer here...we aren't fortunate enough to be on a power lake; I'll know better if we ever move. And while I honor and respect our armed forces(tried to be a part of), the Corps does things that seem to only make sense in their manuals which are written in a strange language that seems to be changeable...they're still making excuses for their '06 screw-up.

I heard on the radio that a federal court is deciding whether or not Atl even has rights to the water on lanier?!!? Only time will tell.

Greg M, if you're hitting the water this w/e, beware of the log jam I saw yesterday on the upper 'hooch. It's better today, but that only means it's headed your way. Little river pond isn't too bad with the semi-submerged party burners. If I put in tomorrow, I'm sure to be towing a few to the shore.

On the lighter side      the lake level has me back working on the boat. Heck, with 2 more on the way we might even be able to host the spring fling as we mentioned before. We really would love to host that if the lake could be more predictable. We have some camping room here at the house and even a couple of extra beds. Our ramp just opened back up this morning, but is only suitable for OB's right now.

We'll keep yall posted!
