Hi,
I have a 1989 SN2001. When I turn the steering to full-lock and put the boat into gear, I get a rattle, which I assume is the rudder. It only occurs near full-lock when I turn to pick up a rider. At less sharp turns, it doesn't rattle.
I checked the rudder and there is quite a bit of play in all directions (side to side and back to front).
What hold the rudder in place besides the "stuffing box"? Are there any other seals on the rudder that might be worn? Or is it the shaft itself?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg, Try taking a couple turns on the packing gland nut. The stuffing box is what holds the rudder. You may consider replacing the packing but usually just tightening will do it. If you do repack, standard waxed flax (not the high performance teflon packing) works fine. There are no seals or bushings. Check for play in the helm too.

Okay, I try tighten it up a bit...
I hope that helps, because the packing gland is at the too of the rudder shaft, and there is play between the shaft and hole at the bottom of the boat.
Surely the rudder shaft can't be worn?

match book...
i think the rudder shaft goes into a port that has pretty tight clearances, this is on larger boats that i have replaced in the past. i would think it would be the same on these, i replaced one this summer in which the rudder snapped off and i only ordered a rudder and it wouldnt go up through the rudder port because that took a shot too. i ended up ordering a port also and from memory its a pretty close, no side to side fit, the shaft also could be worn

Greg, Eric is correct that in extreme cases you need a new rudder and port. It is a brass to brass wear point and would need a lot of use to become unuasable. I say extream because even on the pre war boats I've worked on it has never been a issue.

Do you mean that the packing nut cannot be tightened any further? If that's the case, then Pete's right on- replace the packing.
Does it leak?

I haven't checked if it leaks. Next time I'm out, I'll have a look and tighten it up... If it still leaks, I'll replace the packing.
Anyone know what size packing rope it will use?

Greg, It should be 1/4".

Actually, that could be anyones guess. CC seemed to switch between 3/16" and 1/4" randomly. My '90 took 3/16" in both the driveshaft and rudder.

make sure that rattle isnt a loose prop also, the rudder may be loose but it may not rattle under load
