I went to pet the SN yesterday & found that the transmission is leaking. It is not coming from the shaft seals nor the hose connection. It was wet right under the rear case joint, but that may just be the low point. I see from a site search that there is a drain plug that is prone to leak. I am hoping that this is my problem. Can someone tell me where the plug is? I didn't notice any plug when feeling the trans bottom for the ATF presence, but I could only access the port side.

Heres the drain plug. I know mine wont leak- its basically welded on there. Im sure Eric might have an idea what seal is causing the leak.

Doc, I'm glad to see that you are still around and not caught by some gator down there!!
Chris, I feel it may be time to get the tail end of that engine up. Like the Doc stated the plug would be on the bottom and the only way to check it is to raise the rear end. If the plug isn't the problem them it may be the front seal. I did the front seal on my PP last year and it was not too bad. Probably one of the more advanced shadetree mechanic jobs that you could tackle but once you do the bottle jack trick, you're good to go. Pete, I have had a lot going on....
Bird season is top on that list, lottsa birds lottsa great hunts.....All ends on 1/31/08 Got most things lined out for the trip to the Keys in Feb.Nasty job but someone has to do it. Will make a seperate post as to what Karen and I have plans for while DOWN THERE......... i would say its leaking from the pipe plug seeing that it has been sitting, the oil is not near the input seal while sitting, it is a static leak, you may have to raise as suggested....dont use stop leak better yet, use stop leak im a little slow ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

How slow are ya eric? I still have two transmissions I want ya to build/rebuild/build up. Still trying to get my car projects out of the way before diving into the boats. But I got to get these trannies done sooner than later so if your slow I will see about pulling the last one out and getting them stapped to a pallet next weekend.

Thanks guys. I didn't spot the drain plug because it is at the front & the trans was dry towards that end. I dried the oil off with paper towels & will check it again on Saturday.
Eric - The ATF was present only at the case joint - any chance that the case joint gasket could be leaking? If so, is that a big tear down? Next question - What does the transmission weight? Can 2 people lift it out or do I need to get a engine hoist? (if it comes to that). Thanks again Chris |

Thanks Tim - Unless I figure out another fix, I'll pull it out. I can't stand leaks, even small ones.

Joe, I'll squeeze them in, this is the time of year where you play catch up and do all the things you've been putting off, just finishing a complete transom job, and still have a pretty steady flow of transmission work.

Make the trek up to the boat again today (50 miles 1 way)to check on my leak. Drain plug is not the issue. It appears that the oil has been coming out the vent. There were traces of oil around the vent & down the starboard side, inluding the mount area. I sucked about 6 ounces of ATF out to get the level down to the full mark. It must have been siphoning out with temperature changes. The boat is in a level position.
I cleaned it all up again. Hopefully that is the end of this post! |

I notice a small amount leaking out of mine when it sits. I will check my fill level as well, I have a feeling I may have it too full also.

Randy, Hopefully you over filled it. If not, a high level in the trans would only be caused by water entering via a leak in the cooler. If it happened late in the season, you may not get the typical "strawberry milkshake" because there wasn't enough run time to mix the water into the oil. Yes, in this case, water does mix with oil! There is a additive in the ATF that intensionally does it. This is so if you do get water, you will be running a blend and not getting a slug of only water through it. The same is true of lower unit (outboard and I/O) lube. Pete - Thanks for that advice, something I hadn't considered!
I have to admit that I didn't check the oil level when I took ownership last fall as the PO said it was just worked on. I was thinking he had intentionally overfilled it as I seen recommended in a few posts. I'll be pulling all the fluid out in the spring - but need something better than the turkey baster I used yesterday - may be a hog baster. I think I'll also leak test the trans cooler with an air pressure test just to be sure (I like doing things like that as long as they are cheap). Chris |

obsessed, I only tell this to my closest of friends so please try to keep this a secret,In the spring warm the boat up to operating temp and fill the trans to the top with atf, run for a little while and turn off, remove the return cooler line and put in a bucket then fire the engine up again, when oil stops coming out from the oil line turn the engine off, this method gets 99% of the oil out of the trans and along with diluting it with clean oil from filling it to the top. re-fill and your ready for spring, try to shift trans in and out of forward and reverse to evacuate the piston cavities, this way wont hurt a thing ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

Greg you too can also do this with the Borg Warner, remember diluting the oil with the new is key to this. Always do it on the return line to the transmission because it also empties the cooler, with the BW it does not get all the oil out because of the strainer location so if you can try to suck the rest out after you drain in this manner ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |
