Last week anti-war protestors in Berkley, CA chained themselves across the entrance to a US Marine recruiting office. It took seven hours for the police to remove them.

I propose that we build a fence to separate CA from the real United States.

You should try living here. Last week my son had a game at Berkley. It was the most run down school I have seen. They have time for the world but not their kids. They were very good soccer players.

- It is spelled Berkeley
- HW? you referring to me??
- Bill, I won't pretend to understand your position, and I certainly won't argue/disagree with you. It must be frustrating to be a soldier who has gone off to fight on behalf of the US on multiple deployments, risking your life in an instance, and then it takes 7 hours to remove these meatheads. On the other hand, as much of a freak show as California can sometimes be, I'd bet that you would be amongst the first to volunteer if someone tried to take it away from the US.
-I have a degree from UC Berkeley, or Cal as we prefer to call it. Interesting school. In most ways, it is the most traditional University in the UC system. It also has the most liberal segment in the UC system dating back to the free speech movement of the 60s. The City of Berkeley is also one of the most liberal cities in the United States. Quite an interesting experience as a Reagan Republican attending Cal in the 80s, while the liberal element was building shanty towns across campus to promote divestiture in South Africa.
-I don't agree with the folks chaining themselves across the Marine's doorway, nor do I agree with the idiots living in the trees to stop the building of the new athletic facility. However, I do believe in the First Amendment, and the Constitutional right to free speach and so I guess we live with things we agree with, and things we don't.
- I would remind folks that it is not limited to Berkeley, or California. If I recall, the tragedy at Kent State arose from a student protest of war. Abbie Hoffman and the "Chicago 8" later called the "Chicago 7" arose from a violent protest at the Democratic National convention. I'm sure I could go dig up others accross the US.

I wouldn't condemn California based on what Berkeley is doing. There are plenty of God fearing conservatives in this beautiful state.

Just got back from Lake Tahoe enjoying some incredible snow skiing. Stopping off at home to grab some fine Napa Valley wine, and heading to Santa Cruz to do some surfing with my sister.

Can't beat the diverse micro-climates within a 3 hour radius.

God is not demopublican, republicrat, maoist, socialist, communiist, anrachist, czarist, liberal, moderate, conservative, nor dictator.

He is the great "I am." In whom all things are created. His Kingdom is neither male nor female, black or white, American, Iraqi, Canadian, Kenyan, or Chinese. He is the loving Father who runs out the door to embrace the child who is broken and lost.

He loves the soldier and the protestor, the guard and the inmate, the honest and the thieves, the rich and the poor.

I did. The good Doctor and I put that in the past, so I was just leaving it there.

Chuck, I've never been a religious person, but it has seemed to me that if one beleives in a a God, that such God would be all inclusive as you suggest. It never made much sense to me that some religions seem to suggest that "their God" is exclusive.

Eric, I constantly wrestle around with this. War is hard, and the toll it takes is incredible. I am certainly very thankful for our service men and women and prayerful for them as they perform their duties.   Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor who was instrumental in the Resistance Movement in Germany that had two failed attempts of assasinating Hitler. Bonhoeffer, who was in general opposed to war, justified his part in the effort with this illustration: "If there is a mad man driving a bus the responsible person will do all they can to get the mad man out of the seat in order to save the lives of the innocent." By the way Bonhoeffer was jailed and ultimately put to death by direct order of Hitler. His legacy and story are incredible.

There are also theories for "Just War", the first and most notable being Augustine's in the 4th century. In "Just War" there are several criteria laid out for what justifies going to war, including war is only justified as a "last resort" when all avenues of diplomacy have broken down. There are several other criteria as well. These theories seek to find the balance between "turning the other cheek" and "getting the mad man" out from behind the wheel. Or, when is it appropriate to go after the mad man?

I understand that there are people for or against just about everything. And our constitution allows for freedom of speech. But what gives people the right to violate the law (for example criminal damage, assault, and trespassing)?

While I was fighting in Iraq in '03 anti-war protestors damaged my wife's car by throwing rocks at her and my kids as they drove on post. There is a group of protestors who come to the funerals of fallen soldiers with their signs "Thank God for IED's" and "God laughs when a soldier dies". They stand out in the road and block access to the cemetery. Back in the day anti-war hippies spit on soldiers dressed in uniform.

Soldiers fight, and kill, to defend the constitution of the United States. I am frustrated because the citizens of the United States are permitted to break the law in order to exercise their free speech.

I shouldn't have started this post. I am sorry about that. In the future I'll stick to giving advice on floor and stringer repair.

Bill,

I'm glad you started the post. I feel horrible that others would treat your family in such a fashion. I think it is worse than horrible that protestors disrespect the fallen. They do so much harm.

I commend you for the service you have given and continue to render. You are held in the utmost respect. Please let your family know how grateful we are for the sacrifice that you make, and for the sacrifice that they make while you are serving.

Bill,

As I am a soldier myself, and having been in Yougoslavia, Kosovo and Afganistan, having colleagues that have been in Lebanon; I've seen and felt my share of the effect and horror of war...

I speak only for myself, but I consider myself as a lucky man having been only once in a situation where my finger was ready to pull the trigger... Believe you me, it was the hardest moment of my life! No one in his right mind pulls a trigger as if it were nothing, being a soldier or not... But that's only my humble opinion.

So, I too am frustrated when anti-war prostesters act as if we like to kill just for fun. And I dislike war as much as the next guy and thus respect rhe anti-war opinion. The only thing I ask in return is to show respect for my love to my country.

I basically brought that up because of a fellow co-worker who spent 4 tours in Vietnam (the 4 tours were for the sole reason that so his brother wouldnt go) but he opened up to me and he did pull the trigger and i see the anquish in his face and it bothers me because i think he is dealing with what i brought up earlier, it was a kill or be killed policy and after a while (from his mouth) it didnt matter. he went on the buddy system with 3 of his friends and along with him 1 came back and one of the others just stood up(in battle) because he could not deal with it anymore, I would serve my country if asked and do what i would have to do, I was just curious

BKH,
It's a wide spread problem. When I talk to German, Dutch and French colleagues, they mention the same in their countries.
In my opinion it's the consequence of the prosperity of our western way of life... Nobody knows anymore what it takes to ensure that we can all enjoy our "decadent" way of life, enjoy our freedom.

I don't want to brag, but when diplomacy failed in the Balkans (which to us Europeans is our backyard), it were the armies of different nations who prevented the further escalation of that conflict. We (and by that I mean Europe and the US) extinguished the fire in our "backyard" before it went all the way up to our "bedroom".

When you talk to the normal people over there, 90% of them will tell you that the only reason why it is peaceful, is because the United Nations' armies keep it peaceful. And they love us for it! That's wy that particular mission is called a "Peacekeeping"-mission. What these people fear the most, is the day we will leave... They fear that the ethnic cleansings will start all over then!

John,
I feel the same way!!

Don't have time for a big writeup now, but the freak show continued in Berkeley yesterday. All day protests pitting anti-war/anti-recruiting against supporters of our military. City council meeeting was still going at 11pm and expected to go on for some time.

Bill, you should know that even in crazy Berkeley, probably the most liberal anti-war town you will ever find, over 8000 people turned up, on a workday in support of our military.

Finally had a chance to dig into this. It was even more ridiculous than Bill had posted.

A few nuts chaining themselves to a door in Berkeley is nothing, happens everyday.   This on the other hand, was pathetic.

It seems that back in January the City Counsel of Berkeley passed a resolution 6-3 to send a letter to the the Marine Corps recruiting center stating that the Marines were "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" and considered a menace to the youth of Berkeley. Can you believe it - an alleged government institution.

Over 25,000 letters were sent to the Counsel in protest. Obviously, Veterans, and families of fallen soldiers were particularly offended.
Republican politicians in Washington were threatening to pull funds from the City, the schools, and the University.

Yesterday, there were over 22 hours of protests, standoffs, and counsel meetings. 110 Berkeley Police Officers were on duty, and almost 100 were called in from other cities. This is not to mention the public works employees and others who were called in to clean up the mess afterward. Can you imagine the cost to the City . And to think, the geniuses on the City Counsel started the whole thing.

In the end several hundred speakers were allowed to voice their opinions both in favor and against the resolution. The resolution was to be rewritten somehow to say "against the war, love the troops" as you'd expect from politicians.

So, in conclusion

1) Bill, you were right, this was juvenile and disrepectful.

2) As ridiculous as it can be, Berkeley remains a haven for free speech and democracy in action.

If you here some of the arguments they use in parliament... bunch of little children (juvenile and direspectful as BKH stated).

'Uninvited and unwelcome intruders who are considered a menace to the youth of Berkeley.' The real menace to the youth of Berkeley are the college professors and community leaders who are polluting the minds of students with their own philosophies and agendas.

I will fight to the death to protect our great nation. To date, I have been very successful at making the other guy fight to his own death. I don't ask for anything. I don't need any sympathy. My family doesn't want any sympathy. Hell, that is the path I have chosen.

Unfortunately, a great percentage of people residing in our country are willing to go to almost any length to undermine the military and the fundamental security operations of our nation. The difference between them and me is that they want to force their opinion on the rest of us.

Free speech my ass. If the city council of Berkeley wants to eject the military, then they are a threat to the security of this nation. The leaders should be tried for treason. I would happily carry out their executions.

Bill,

I sure hope you will also fight for our nation, as we are partners...
I know I would fight for yours... hell, for all the free nations... to keep them free!!

Bill

Thanks for starting, IMHO, one of the best threads I've read on this site, boats or no boats.
You bring up a good point with the problem of the "philosophies and agendas" of the professors teaching our kids. I have a son who is a freshman at The University of Michigan. It may not be as liberal as Berkeley, but it's right up there. I've tried to instill in him that everyone has an opinion, and some try to use their position to further that opinion. We've discussed how he should form his own political views based on what he learns in life, not by what he is "taught" by some professors.
BTW; We just had a surprise visit today, from one of our employees who, as an army reservist, we hadn't seen in about three years. We thought he was looking to come back to work, his job is still held for him. But he just stopped by to tell us that he re-upped for another (5) years.

Thanks to all those who protect our way of life!

Steve

I had several spelling errors, which I normally try to avoid. When I saw Bill's correct spelling of Council, I thought to myself "that was kind of dumb Brian." BKH

It looks like I'm about a week late for a really good post. Just wanted to add two cents.

I noticed some comments about beliefs and this and that. I've touched on my own Christian beliefs here before (I think it was around Christmas (there's a shocker)), but something I noticed in this post that was noteworthy.

There seems to be an interest and a willingness to discuss things, usually, in a civilized fashion regardless of whether it ruffles your feathers a little (or even a lot). With that, for what it's worth, I'm impressed.

The only reason I mention it is that, on another nice boat related site (and I just decided NOT to name the site) there had been an "off topic" or "anything you want to talk about" forum that, regardless of the word "anything" being in the forum title, eventually chose to ban any talk whatsoever about two particular things; as they put it, and many do, the dreaded "politics or religion!"

So, with a "WARNING" note from the moderator, it became taboo to mention anything about either politics or religion, even in that forum.

Incidentally, I've noticed they never did change the forum name to "Anything you want to talk about 'EXCEPT' poitics and religion!" It would now seem a more accurate description.

Anyway, when that happened I thought, it's really too bad! Few things have hit me as being as truly and profoundly silly as the implications of the old adage (or variations of it):

"Two things you should never talk about are politics and religion!"

I say the implications are profound because, since our views of both politics and religion are unevitably and strongly linked to our deepest thoughts and convictions about pretty much everything, that saying could easily and quite accurately be paraphrased as follows:

"You should never talk about anything that’s really important to you!"

Put that way, most would recognize it as complete nonsense, but it really is the same thing when you "THINK" about it. I guess that's what people, too often, forget to do.

Hopefully, some here will recall this thought the next time they hear someone say:

"Two things I’ve learned to never talk about are..."

I appreciated the comment that it’s not all about boats, etc. Of course, to pop in at this site, one would think that it is "all about boats" and I’m sure guilty -- but hey, what can you do -- they're cool, and fun, and nostalgic, and all that!!

I’m thinking of starting a new slogan, on a more positive note "Two things I always talk about, Boats and...

...Hmmmm? What was the other one?

Was there another one? –

How 'bout "...Boats that run and Boats that need fixed!"

Seriously, just some observations and food for thought (because I’m not allowed to type stuff like this at the other site).

64, well said,

One of the reasons this is a great site is that opinions can be expressed, and some disagreement over them, but then be able to move on.

Lot's of good friendships are being formed here.

Old boat people are great!

Keith is the one to be praised on this issue, amazing how this forum kinda self regulates itself.
I too have come off the cuff with some prejudged ideas of my own,and was put in my place in short order.
The issues are broad and opinions varied, but no hint of banning any ideals or topics.
what a great site we have here, and the info and kindred spirit flows to all that want to be a part of this family. But then there is always a few that will be apart from rather than a part of, these are the few that lose out on the concept that this site was founded on.
To you Keith I raise a TOAST< and say THANX
