Just wondering how many goober grabbers out there like them "bald". Hard to find up here in the Chicago area. I'm lucky to have some friends in Atlanta who send me the canned version.

Ok, This was sort of a test for the northerners but I'm surprised the southerners didn't jump at it right away. I'm a peanut freak and was introduced to boiled peanuts years ago when I made a service call to the W. B. Roddenbery Co. in Cairo Georgia. Yesterday I had a taste for some "bald" peanuts and was on line looking for some since my friends in Atlanta haven't sent me any in a while. While on line, I was reading some of the facts about them and discovered the the proper southern pronunciation for boiled peanuts is "bald peanuts"

By the way, I never intended to "leave myself open" to this going beyond peanuts!! However, knowing how some of our members minds work, it didn't surprise me with the route it took!!

I ended up ordering a 1/2 case of regular and a 1/2 case of cajun style bald so I'll be happy for the next couple of months.

Love em'. Just did'nt know the proper terminology.
We used to get them right out of the boiling pot, in front of some shack near I-75 in Sarasota FL. My wife thinks they're gross, too slimy.
I'm a peanut junkie, always have a big bag at the house. But they are nothing like the ones right out of the pot.

I'm certainly a yankee, but having lived in Houston for 8 years learned a little about the language. Some translations

awl - stuff in the crankcase
tars - go on the wheels
tar - superstructure on wakeboard boats
ahce - cools down drinks, covers lakes in   winters up north
roont - busted
ignernt - not smart
tot - not loose
rot - not left, (or in the case of engines - bacerds)

and so on.

Good ones Larry!

Pete, when we were down visiting Reid last summer Ruck cooked some of those up, amongst so many other great things, first time ever trying them for me, they were pretty good.

Johnny, how did you know who I was with Friday night? Dang, now you are probably gonna want me to post some pics!

Greg, I didn't invent the term "bald", I did read it when looking on line for a source to buy them! Maybe you don't live far enough south!!! Different accents in the Atlanta area??

From the American Chemical Society:
"Bald' peanuts: Tasty treats turn out to be healthy, too"

"People in the southern states love to snack on bald peanuts. No, not peanuts that lost their hair, but boiled peanuts peanuts boiled in a pot of hot, salted water. Now theres news that boiled peanuts might also contain higher amounts of substances that can help prevent diseases than regular peanuts."

Bald    Bawll'd    Berl'd

These all sound similar with a southern draw...maybe this is the origin of 'Bald' as in the ad you posted?

Eric

They're not mushy if done right. I don't think the pasta term el'dante (sp) applies, but they are best right before they turn mushy.

Okay I must confess that I didn't know what you wuz talkin bout eeder. I've lived here in Jawja for 38 years ( moved here when I wuz 2) and never heard pronounced that way.

Eric, you don't know what your missing. Boiled peanuts are the best and in my opinion better when there HOT!

One of the guys at work brought left overs from his superbowl party and brought in a gallon bag of boiled and a gallon bag of roasted peanuts and the boiled peanuts were gone in an hour. Mind you I work at Delta Airlines and most guys " Ain't from around here." Most of them are from pittsburg or surrounding area so most Yankees try em' and love em'.

Pete, when you have boiled peanut withdrawl syndrome then let me know. I can send some up to cheeseland when needed.

Morfoot

My question is, how good are the ones that are packaged, compared to those right out of the pot?

They aren't too bad.....It's not to hard to tell the difference.I mean, how hard is it to screw up bolied peanuts? The key is to NOT add too much salt. I've done it myself with a camp stove and a 1 gallon coffee can.

But to answer your question it's just like anything else. Most things taste better right off the grill, pan, oven,or whatever with the exception of Soup. Some folks like em' cold just some folks like their pizza or chicken.

Only bad ones I've ever had were ones that were still crunchy or too much salt.

Any you guy's ever had "Pork Rinds" Kinda like the same thing. Better right out of the pot but good all around.

Brunswick Stew is most excellant too if you've ever had it. Ya gotta like BBQ though.

I am a total fanatic. I actually did not know what you were talking about with the "bald" lingo. The funny thing is that my friends in Maryland think its funny when I say boiled peanuts, because they think I'm saying bald peanuts. I get two bushels a year (one for the lake and one for home) and boil them for 15 minutes. I then pack them in one gallon freezer bags and freeze them. When we're ready to make peanuts, we then boil them for 20 minutes and as stated above add a moderate amout of salt. Too much salt ruins them. The key to adding salt is to add it after the boiling is finished. As the peanuts began to cool, they soke up the salt. They don't need to cool too much, before they're perfect.

We live in Maryland and the only kind of boiled peanuts around here are in a can, which are totally subpar for me. I make a trip to the state farmers market in Columbia, South Carolina every year to get my "green" peanuts, which implies fresh out of the ground.

If I'm not mistaken, Laurie (of Reid p) brought some boiled peanuts to Green Lake last year.

Pete, some of this lends credibility to my guess!

The only place to get 'em is the side of the road from a big black pot! That includes a cooker you might not invite home for dinner! LOL
