| if i was a bit shy on the catalyst in my resin i laid down last night what are the chances of it ever curing? can i put a layer with the correct ratio on and pray it'll help them along? oh and i need to take some heaters to my workshop tonight |

Daniel, Epoxy or polyester? Temp? What are you doing?
How are you measuring? If you are doing a structural repair you should be using epoxy and the pumps for measuring. Give it some time and it will cure. Polyester, soon to be as hot as possible its about 15' C here at the mo, last night i was usuing a tea spoon. realised on the drive home i messed up my maths and think i've added a 1/10 of what i shud of. this i know is bad....
im redoing the floor. |

Daniel, It will cure but will take longer. Do get the heat on it. This is just the floor? No stringers? Are you putting another layer over it? That will help. too late i scooped all of it out.... i got some digiscales today and id used 2kg of resin with barely 1ml of hardner.... yep slight decimal point error.... am thinking i cud mix in some more hardner and puut my mix back in maybe,
all stringers and everything i have a bare hull currently... i now have a panic on about not using epoxy resin? |

Daniel, I wouldn't try remixing the resin that you removed. As long as you have it out, it is just to risky to try it again. As far as the epoxy resin goes, there are two reasons to use it. Its strength it greater than polyester which makes it great for structural work but the major reason is that it isn't hygroscopic like polester is. We are trying to prevent water moisture from entering the new wood so it is a major benefit in preventing future rot problems. Even the bottom edges of new wood where it touches the hull benefit from a layer of epoxy. Over time water will migrate through the polyester hull adding moisture to the wood. The non hygroscopic nature of epoxy is the reason it is used as a barrier coat when hulls have blistering problems.
I'm glad you got the under catalyzed out. I didn't realize that you had under estimated that much. I will correct myself and now state that it may not have never cured no matter how much heat you put on it or how much time you gave it. I've always had the tendency to do the opposite and end up with a HOT can in my hands!!! Speaking of hot ether with epoxy of poly, if mixing large batches don't put it in a small area such as a can. It will concentrate the heat! Spread the mixed resin out in a plastic roller tray. i bought a load of mixing buckets i was trying to bed a stringer in, what sort of roller do i need to use i've seen these aluminium ones but what exactly do the look like are they just knurled or do they have a significant grooves?
Metal machinist u see and i hate paying for stuff i can get make for nought. On the epoxy vs polyester. Dam epoxys expensive, also was the stuff i removed not polyester? i can understand the structural benefits but is polyester and new wood going to be worse than rotten stringers? obviously id not like to do the job twice. I'm on a budget here and things tend to be more expensive in the uk usually. for instance usually they just change the $ symbol to £ and don't alter the price. |
