In 1987 I was using a friends 1964 Correct Craft American Skier with a Gray Marine 4cyl for the summer. I was out on the Fox River here in Illinois and was stopped by a family commenting about the boat. Turns out he had a 1968 Mustang SS that had seen better days. Since he could not do any of the work himself he sold it to me later that fall.
The Holman Moody 302 was stuck, all the glass broken out, including the gauges, a bent skeg and missing the rudder, but it had the original trailer and new tires. He only wanted what he had into the tires. I had the motor running in a couple of days, cleaned up the hull and replaced the gauges.
The next fall I rebuilt the engine,30 over, new crane cam,ARP main studs & rod bolts, heads reworked, 4bbl Holly carb & manifold and balanced. I was even able to get parts for Jabsco water pump. That summer, when moving, he found the original rudder and gave it to me. After the usual foam removal and new interior it looks and runs great, deepwater barefoot starts are no trouble. |
