Another project boat. This is a 1971 Ski Nautique promo boat which we found west of Chicago three years ago, and purchased from the original owner who was a competive skier. It has seen very many hours or use and was originally a very bright yellow which has faded to a dull mustard. And unfortunately, there’s no revitalization to this finish. Since the photos were taken the entire boat has been wet sanded and much of it compounded. It will still shine, but the color is still several shades darker than the original. So an original color paint job is planned after filling numerous dings and dents. The unique Ski Nautique script on the sides is/was original for the promo boats prior to the later production, and more pleasing script started in about ’73. The redo of that is up for debate.
The boat came with 3 speedos which includes the forward facing unit in the front of the engine box. These were the neat white-faced gauges, but unfortunately have faded to yellow-brown. I know little about the history of this original 351 Crusader Conqueror engine, but it does idle great and on the one test run seemed to run perfect. A larger Holley, aluminum intake, and high energy coil have been added sometime over the last umpteen years.
The rear seats still sport the original white and black vinyl but need replacement. The front seats were redone in yellow sometime way long ago, but will be replaced in the black and white to match the rears.
It may take some time, but this once classic Correct Craft is destined to show her true colors once again. Stay tuned.
