This is my father’s boat, it is still in un-restored original condition. He bought it as a demonstrator, as the story goes, before he bought my mother her engagement ring. It has always and still is today in Dubuque, IA and has mainly been on the Mississippi River. Dad was a founding member of the Dubuque Water Ski Club and I believe this was the first tournament boat that they used.
Early in the boat’s career, Dad was officiating one of the water ski races, where they pulled a slalom skier in a race around the Dubuque Island. One of the racers didn’t see Dad in the Nautique and was headed right at him, Dad dove to the back between the engine and the gunnel. Because the Nautique sits so low in the water, the boat rode right up the bow, took out the windshield and the skeg hit the tow pylon and the rear deck. The mighty Nautique had a bent tow pylon (replaced), a new windshield (replaced) and the scar from the skeg hitting the rear deck is still there today as a reminder.
We spent my entire childhood skiing behind this boat and it is still enjoyed by the family and grandchildren today.
