My father, Lock Richards, Jr. founded and operated a marine business at Lake Tahoe in the 1950s and 1960s called "Locks Landing". He had four locations including Chambers Lodge, Camp Richardson, Globins and Stateline. He had a fleet of four 1950's era Correct Crafts all purchased direct from the factory, and named: "Locks Lassie" (after my sister), "Locks Lady" (after my grandma), "Locks Liz" (after my mom, Elisabeth), and "Locks Loki" (after his mischievous self??). His business involved everything from delivering mail by boat, to teaching water skiing, to Emerald Bay speedboat rides, to putting on a weekly water ski show every Friday evening for the entire beach at Camp Richardson. My dad went on to become Chief of the California Department of Harbors and Watercraft under Governor Pat Brown and was integral in drafting California's boating laws and producing California's "ABC's of Boating" booklet.
Of the four Correct Crafts, we still have "Locks Lassie" in the family. This boat was featured in a popular Lake Tahoe postcard which was sponsored by Kodak to promote their new (at the time) color film. Locks Lassie is the boat on the right in the postcard and is a 1957 20' Correct Craft Debonnaire. The back of the postcard reads, "One of the many exciting speedboat trips from Locks Landing on beautiful Lake Tahoe". The photo was taken by the photographer from a ladder at the end of the Camp Richardson Pier, as my dad (piloting "Locks Liz" on left (with my mom and my older sister by his side - I was not yet born when this photo was taken) and his employee (driving "Locks Lassie"), swung around for the photo. "Locks Lassie's" home has always been on Lake Tahoe.
Cheers!
Lock Richards III
