It was also cut further back in the boat where he put speakers. The radio and all of the components have been removed and will be reglassed. I don’t see a need for the radio, you usually can’t hear it over the engine.

He must have plugged the tubing coming from the pitot itself or you'd have water spraying around under the dash while the boat was moving

I found out why my Speedometer stopped working. There was a 2 year period of time between my father in-law owning the boat to my wife and I. The person prior to me put a radio in the dash. When I removed the radio last night, you can see the top right corner of the radio hole where he cut through the pitot tube.

Very similar to the way it looks now... but the hole for the pitot tubing is slightly larger (1/2”).

The hole is round.

Correct, I was curious how the back of the housing looked with the larger hole in the back.

Yes. 1/2” ish. You will want to enlarge the hole used by the pitot tubing. You want to know how the back of the housing looks with the larger hole?

When I spoke with someone from Nautic Laugic, they said that I would need to drill an additional hole in the back of my current speedometer to allow room for the pigtail. Has anyone else had to do this? Just curious how big the hole is and how it looks. They said I couldn’t use the internal unit for my 77 Ski Tique Speedo.

Can anyone using the external gps conversion kit from Nautic Laudic tell me where you mounted the antenna or if it can be mounted under the dash?

I kept my originals in my 86 2001, just plug up my portable Garmin using suction cup and rock on. Best of both!,

I saw this topic was active again...I did get one of them to work fairly accurately this summer, at least 90% of the time. I am planning repairing my dash pod this winter and am going to look into fixing the originals and see how that goes before going the GPS route.

Reasonably accurate (when properly adjusted), yes. Reliable? That will depend on your water conditions. Weedy or debris filled waterways will cause issues with pitot systems. They also cannot compensate for current if you care about speed over land (slalom course in a river, for instance).

There is certainly a place for a $200 gps conversion in an older boat. Originality (appearance), reliability and accuracy are among the benefits, as is simplicity (removing the pitot, tubing, etc) if you so desire. Not all disciplines require speed control, and a converted analog gauge compliments those that do... at a much lower price point.

Are you saying they are not accurate between 5 and 45?

The old water pressure driven Air Guides are very accurate. As accurate as you will need.
They are so accurate I would not consider going GPS driven in an older boat.

GPS comes into play if you are looking for speed control for skiing or other bells and whistles like clocks and compasses.

Over 45? I thought they read accurately up to 85 with the correct graphics?

Yes, they can do the conversion to the older Air Guides, but I have not done it myself.

Thanks Donald, I watched the video on how to convert it to GPS. Seems pretty straight forward.

Do you know if the conversions will work for an older airguide? I have a 77 Ski Tique, the website didn’t list these. Curious if anyone has tried it.   My airguide hasn’t worked in a few years, I would love to fill the holes in and remove the pitot

Under 5mph and over 45mph.

If your gauges sometimes work, then the issue you’re having isn’t with the gauges. Consider not scrapping/cannibalizing the internals when you convert. Send me a PM for details.

My immediate plan is to just retrofit my existing gauges with the nauticlaugic GPS system and the new faces this fall or spring. The existing ones must have known something was up since one worked all weekend and the other one mustered it's way up to 15-20 most of the time. As far as low speed accuracy where does the GPS retrofit struggle with accuracy, is it decent around 20mph?

I like the precision star I run both and I like the clock and the handy dandy compass.(you know when driving in the pouring rain and you can't see a thing) Oh not to mention trip meter is easy to figure the fuel burn later...

That's what I did in the Barefoot. The PrecisionStar is good for low speed accuracy and provides a clock which doesn't need resetting. The looks are not original but match fairly well and are very useful.

I wouldn’t gut those brand new ones if you’re going GPS.
If the ones you have are faded I’d get new faces from here http://www.classicboatwork.com/classicparts/gauges/airguide/agr/agr.html and gut the old ones
