What engine, where did you get the flywheel? What was so wrong that it needed to be replaced?

How about some details. What engine are you working on? Ford, Chevy?
Some flywheels are for an internally balanced engine, some are for external balance. You need to know more to get good answers. |

It looks like you have a 92 SNOB with a 351W.
Does it have the ProTec ignition system or a regular distributor. And there's a reason for asking that |

Firing order wasn’t messed with , it ran smooth as silk before the work . Shifts in and out of gear like butter . When you rev the engine in comes the vibration

Would you know the brand and part number of the flywheel?
So when you rev it up in neutral (no load) you get the vibration? |

He’s telling me it can’t be the damper plate because it all was installed as it came off in the same bolt pattern or whatever as the old one . He did put a carb kit on it as I had a major leak at the accelerator pump

Friend of mine did the damper plate on his 88 and says it was the same thing with the bad vibration and he got what he called a Sachs plate and it was better ..

So in review he put a carb kit on , new flywheel not just ring gear , rear main seal, damper plate .. and starter ... ran beautifully before all this except for the starting issue and carb leak but it ran smooth

What I'm thinking and I suspect Ken too is that the wrong flywheel may have been used. Fords are externally balanced- there are two different imbalances 28 oz and a 50 oz,so a flywheel part number if/when you can get it would help.

So now you get around to mentioning something else that was done at the same time like a carburetor kit that maybe should have been mentioned in the first post Easy enough to have a rough running engine due to some carburetor issues. Not knowing what this "roughness " is like without being there, I think I'd be looking at the rebuild job on the carburetor if the flywheel is the correct 28 oz imbalance |

Is there an automotive application for a damper? Are they easy to get. Mine is looking a little worn.

Wrong flywheel, he tells me the counterweight on the new one was twice the size of the original , thank you very much for the advice . Asking him to double check the flywheel saved us lots of headaches. Thank you again

If you want the right flywheel from an automotive application ask the parts guy for a flywheel for a 67 Ford Mustang with a 289 and a 4 speed.and you'll have the right 28 oz. imbalance
Here's a link showing a few part numbers from aftermarket suppliers link |

I get the feeling that you could use the old flywheel with a new ring gear based on your description of having "starter problems"
If just the teeth are chewed up, get a 157 tooth ring gear and replace the old gear. It's a lot cheaper too Here'a a link to a thread with some ring gear part numbers in a post by GaryS link Or if you're asking at the parts store, use the same 67 Mustang with a 289 |
