62 Classic Rescue

I went down at lunch to check out the 62 Classic that Art @ SECC wanted someone to rescue here in Atlanta. It is a 62 fiberglass classic. It would need the stringers replaced, of course a new floor, hull sanded down & reglassed or painted (spider cracks all over except bottom), probably rebuild the motor (said to turn over, but I didn't try), new windshield (1/2 of original & 1 plastic included), need front seat & motor cover. It has the rear seat frame in good condition, trailer could be used with sandblasting & repaint (looks like the original trailer). Steering appears good, as well as gas tank. 283 crusader motor w/ velvet drive trans. If someone was wanting to do the work, it would be a great looking classic restored. Probably a little more than I can do right now (still got the skier to finish). Serial number is pc172 as on the stringer. I have attached some pics of the boat. He is wanting to move it soon, so if someone is interested you can let me know & I will work with you if possible to pick it up & hold onto it till you can get it, or put you in touch with the owner. He is going to tear it apart soon & sell what parts he can & scrap the hull, etc. He said he had $1000 in it & would like to get that back. I am sure offers would be considered. Great guy to talk to.

Is that wakeboard pylon extension for night skiing

Not necessarily, I witnessed one night skiing event, driver to remain unnamed, in which the only ticket issued was for no Nav light, had we had that pole perhaps we could have pulled an all night-er.

I'm going to look at it in the morning. Could I get someone to give me a crash course on this motor? What is it? What is it's reputation, and are there parts that are going to be super hard to find or super expensive?

I'm asking because I've read in some older threads that this can happen. For example, I didn't know that a '94 mustang I used to have would always need expensive tires.

I think she is getting ready to ask for something much more costly!
FYI- Reid also let me know what looks like a base & back to the rear seat is actually a base for the front & base for the rear.

Greg and Greg, have no fear, I'm not in the running here. I think it needs to be Buffaloed.

And if this one doesn't pan out, I know where there's another up very close to me in NC that needs just a handful of hours (and $$) to be completed. It can be had for about $5K which I think is a great price for what he's got invested in the restoration so far.   

I'm with you Reid. I am not in the running either. I have to finish the skier & do a few things to the BFN this winter before I can go for another one. I am just trying to help keep this one out of the dump if possible. Hopefully Buffalo can get it for Ms. Buffalo for xmas!

What are the real odds of finding this engine cover?

Thanks reid, I was beginning to feel a little bit lonely here, but I guess most are doing Thanksgiving things.

I was referring to the engine box/doghouse. I went back throught the archives here and found a few things. I saw where the hull #'s in the 120 and 145 range have been discussed...and the topic was '62 or '63 maybe? This one is PC172 and so may be newer than '62?

I also saw several in the diaries section with what looked like a fiberglass box with a 'scoop' on top, and I found a related thread saying they were hard to find. Do you know the last year of the wooden box?

I really appreciate the info. If I get this boat or one like it, my goal would be the original look, and I'd hate to get something that I can't finish.
