Ok i have the steering cable replaced and its like butter. Now i have water coming in from the top of the huge nuts that attached the rudder to the steering cable. I have also noticed the rudder moves up and down about 2 inches if I move it by hand. i have tried to adjust the collar and the locking nut with no luck does anyone have any material showing hoe the housing is assembled?

Joe, You need to repack it just like you would the stuffing box on the prop shaft. It should take the 1/4" packing that Skidim sells or any marina. There are several good threads on the procedure. I'll see if I can find one and get back.

I wouldnt make that assumption. My '90 took 3/16". Id pull the old stuff out or measure the packing gland first to be sure. |

The up and down movement is normal and acceptable. You could try tightening the packing nut.

Same with my 88. Just ask them at Skidim. They'll know. |

Just called and Skidim told me is 3/16 on both. Well, at least on a 87 SN.
