I was cleaning and inspecting my mufflers last night getting ready to throw a coat of paint on them when I noticed the end of one of my mufflers had a split at the end where the tube goes into the reducer. Should I go ahead and put a layer of glass on this to seal it up while I have it out of the boat? If so what would be best mat or cloth?

Replace them with stainless pipe or copper. Get a little rumble

What does a 3" piece of stainless or copper around 4' run? would have to see if it is in the budget. Anyone have a video of one, I am not sure if I have ever heard one setup this way. |

Stainless will be close to the same price as good corrugated exhaust hose (~$20/ft). Copper will be more.
If you dont want the boat to be loud, dont make the change! Personally, Id probably repair the muffler, if required. I cant see the split that youre talking about. It looks like a fiberglass muffler though- so grind out the damage and reglass, if its questionable. |

Yea I think the boat is plenty loud as it is.  Plus I have put quite a bit of money in this project so far, so not adding to that cost is a good thing. The split is not big there are 2-3 places about 1/2" long and the split is only about 1/16" wide right now. I just wanted to fix it now before it got worse. I would prefer to not have to work on the boat for a while after I finish if I can help it!!

A friend of mine just ordered some 600 degree rated 'fiberglass tape'. Haven't seen it yet. He's going to use it to make a similar repair...

He will have other more serious problems if he needs that rating
 If they are like my mufflers that end cone is glued and the pipe fits down inside like a normal pvc plumming pipe.I wonder if you just grind the fillet down to good glass and just fill it like you did the stringers to the hull to make that radius again?

I took a good look at it when I got home and it is the type that the tube slips in the end like PVC. The fillet was pulling away from the end just a bit. So I just took some black gasket silicone and went over the whole joint. I think it will be fine, it was not leaking before so hopefully it will not now. If it does it is easy enough to take out and repair or replace.

I'm with Paul on this one. I'd wrap a few layers of glass cloth around it and call it good. Cloth will conyour better than mat. Pull the glass as taught as you can around it then wrap it in saran wrap pulling it tight to get the compression you need for a stronger bond. Gonna need to pull that silicon off though. Resin don't like it! |

Ok you all talked me into it. I was not trying to cut corners, I did not think it would be that big of a deal. It is easy enough to put a couple of layers of cloth on. So I will do that.
