1984 Ski Nautique 2001
Engine Model PRD WR R10 Pleasurecraft Marine Right-Hand Rotation from Rear 351 CID -- 255 h.p. Warner Velvet Drive Model 10-17-003 Direct Drive (1:1) Mallory YLM554DV Distributor Conversion As soon as I got the fuel filter I ordered, I knew I had ordered the wrong one. Here's my fuel pump, and the fuel filter is inside the lower bowl, right? Here's the fuel filter I ordered like a dummy... What's the right part number for the fuel filter in my fuel pump on my 1984 SN2001 351W? While I'm at it, what's the right part number for the carb inlet filter, where the hard line goes into front left corner of the Holley 4-barrel carb? I need to look more closely at the taper lock fitting nuts for that inlet line going into the carb. I didn't see any flats on the larger fitting. Not sure what the line wrench would be grabbing. I'm wondering if I'm going to find a bunch of dissolving fuel line in my filter bowl. Damn ethanol crap around here, idiot politicians. Anything to fill the campaign coffers. |

My fuel filter is in the front of the engine in what looks like a remote oil filter housing... I don't have any pictures at the moment, but would think you probably have a remote filter as well... see where the fuel lines go from the tank and confirm. If you think the filter bowl on the bottom of the pump is the only one, I'd take the bowl off, and compare old filter with what is available on SKIDIM or N3's websites

I too have an 84 SN and the fuel/water separator filter that you have ordered goes in the location where Dreaming described. That is the standard location. It should be on the port side of the ski pylon.
Note that the fuel/water separator is probably going to be very tough to unscrew. You'll need to remove the fuel hoses (clamp them first) and you should open the drain from the bottom to let it drain out. Take the whole assembly out and put it in a vise and use a filter strap wrench to remove it. Here's the location: |

Thanks for the replies. I do not have the remote fuel/water separator filter. The fuel line runs straight from the back to the fuel pump and attaches as shown in my first photo.
It's interesting that in the 1978 Ford Marine Power Products 302-351 Parts List, the fuel filter is listed with a bowl and filter element. The worthless list gives no part numbers, though. The old Pleasurecraft Owners Manual (can't find a date in it) says:
I'll eventually switch to that, but for now I just want to change the filter. I think Skidim has the right filter:
But of course I'm trying to order this on a Friday afternoon and they closed at 3 pm Eastern.................... You know, that filter looks an awful lot like the fuel pump filter element in my Mercruiser 140 fuel pump, I think I'll compare them. |

Do you have a NAPA near you? You may be able to find it there.
That's an interesting note you found in the manual. Post some more pics of your boat and engine if you get a chance. |

Napa has them, I would recommend putting some type of seperater/filter on the boat. It is supposed to have one.

Go to NAPA and ask for this filter with their part number sme 187860. This should be it but take yours to compare. I think that this pump is used on Mercruisers and Commanders. It was also a replacement pump that would fit small block Fords and sold by Summit ,ski dim and others. I bought one for a spare before I was able to rebuild my original pump.

All PCMs have been black since ~1994. Of course, his is a '84, so its been repainted. My guess is that it has been apart, since that does not look to be an original fuel pump. The large Fram filter/water separators were added sometime in the '80's... but I cant say for sure whether it should be there on a '84. |

I called NAPA and they ordered me their version of my Mercruiser fuel pump filter, Quicksilver 35-49088Q2, Sierra 187860, but they cross referenced it to a NAPA filter made by Wix. 7 bucks and change. Picked it up this afternoon. I'll compare it when I open the fuel filter. I think it's the same one, if not it'll be a spare for the Merc.

From page 4 of the PCM Engine Service Manual, "Horsepower and Type". I can't find any date in that manual. Is it incorrect for a mid-80's engine? |

Can't be a Chevy,it's a Carter pump for a Ford. This pump will fit any small block Ford no matter who marinized it,ie MerCruiser, HM, PCM,Commander,Intercepter etc. MerCruiser marinized Fords too. Here is my spare which is the same Here is my original Carter which after a rebuild have reinstalled here it is at Summit |

NAPA's Wix version of the 187860 fuel filter was the right one.

Yeah, I agree. It's like my old Mercruiser 140. The sterndrive reduces the hp at the prop, plus it's 40 years old. I don't want to know what I really get... but it's been great for the big old pontoon. And I've towed plenty of "new" boats off the water with it. I'm just curious why one manual says 240 hp and another 255 hp, and where the higher number came from. Maybe it's a later year manual. |
