UPDATE: SOLD! Old Blue gets a new home............
We will be selling our old 1978 Ford F250 Camper Special Pickup. This has been a great truck for us that we would like to go to someone who will restore it. What are some good old truck forums (like CCfan) where I can post this truck to find it "a good home"? Thanks Guys! |

Good looking truck! What motor do you have in there...400M? If your '78 is vintage, my '68 Camper Special must be downright antique:).
The Spike TV show "Trucks" did a restoration on one almost like yours a year or so back. They put the Ford body on a Dodge Cummins chassis/drivetrain. |

It has a 351.... Handy for interchange with the '92 Excel consumables...
In our family - Vintage means old and dirty. Our joke is that if we found a vintage chair (or boat) ....it's usually just old....and likely dirty! Let's see the '68 - Pics or you don't have one! Ha......... |

I was always under the impression that camper special was a heavier rear axle and springs and for some reason so many seemed to have the tool box on the bedside that Steves has

I bought my truck up in Mpls back in 2003. I bought it from the original owners daughter. Her dad died and they shipped the truck to her. They didn't know it was a Camper Special when I bought it on ebay. It spent it's whole life prior to 1999 or so in Los Angeles. The story the daughter told me was that her dad who was a truck driver wanted the tool box in the side, but, wanted to cut back on $$, so he didn't opt for the tool box. I wish it had one, but, I can live with out it. I had a 1970 Camper Special that I went to LA to get that did have it. So, they were options.
The Camper Special gave you wide West Coast mirrors. They are a PIA to get in and out of the garage with, so I took them off (but still have them). It also has a heavier radiator, and dual caliper front disc brakes. I really don't think the rear axle is any heavier than a normal F250. It also has dual gas tanks. Oh, and you get a really bitchin' die cast insignia that says "Camper Special". |

Pete,
David's right on the mark for Camper Special upgrades. I was surprised at the rear axle weight rating.... better than most F350/3500s now have..... 5,300# rear axle weight rating. |

Steve....I thought the '77-'79 Ford trucks used the "M" as in Modified motors. Wouldn't your Excel have used the "W"/Windsor motors? You may be referring to Fram oil filters ( ), spark plugs, belts, etc though. Just curious. |

Correct - It is an "M" and yes, I used the same great Frams and supporting "consumable" parts on the Ford and the Excel.

I'm pretty sure the camper specials have heavier springs. I had a 68 for about 10 years, and my Dad probably had 20 of them for short periods of time over the years. Those mirrors are a PITA BKH. |

Hmm I did a couple searches and they say camper special was pre-wirng for camper, heavy duty radiator, and heavy duty alternator. I guess my uncle must have added the enormous overload springs on mine.

I would guess that Ford did add heavier heavier springs, and added some wiring too. I know mine has some electrical outlets in the bed, and there is some goofy remnants of wiring in different places. Some may have been added by the PO.
At one point in the mid '70's, Ford moved the axle back on some models, and called it a Super Camper Special IIRC. It looked very strange. They also added a funky tire carrier on the outside of the bed that looked like a giant tool box. Very rare. I have all the literature around here somewhere that has all that stuff in it. Ford also had the Trailer Special, and the Farm & Ranch Special too. But, the CS was by far the most popular. |

The good: Solid, generally rust-free, 126K original miles, good ol' work truck
The bad: Needs tires & is 2x4 (don't know how your ramps are), good ol' work truck NADA is crazy high for a 35+ yr old truck - asking $4,700.00. If interested PM or email me....... needs to go to someone who will use and/or restore it. I decided to list it in the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum. We'll see..... |

The GMC is a loaner ...... a 2500HD version of the 3500HD we are going to order. We'll order it on Valentine's Day because Val is a hopeless romantic (That's the day she asked me to marry her..... or was it the other way 'round? , Hmm)... Awesome Woman! (As terrific as she is, she still won't let me have 3 Correct Crafts!) |

Love that truck Steve, wish it was a 4x4!
Larry, ken is worried about his 2012 F150 getting old and unreliable... I'm thinking a '78 might be a bit out of his league. |

Thanks Tim - me too. Kinda sad to see it go. I've had it as long as I've had my oldest daughter! That's why I've not really worked hard to sell it..... But I need the space and the GMC is incredible (at only 10x the price). |
