I have only had my 89 out a couple of times at night and never noticed this before but when I turn the lights on make that Only when I turn on the full navagation lights the temp gauge goes up and the voltage gauge drops to 11V and the gas gauge flucutates alot more than normal and reads less gas. What is going on?

Our boats suffer from inadequate wiring to the dash. All the gauges are daisy-chained together with only one small guage wire for power and one for ground feeding all of them. Run some thicker wires up to the dash and it should solve the problem.

clean the leads and make sure the belt is tight on the alternator. You should not be able to spin the fan on the alternator if the belt is proberly tightened

Yes, what 79.. said. And especially pay attention to the grounds as this is what is daisy chained from instrument to instrument and usually the cause of the proplems, IMHO.

Had a similar problem or reduced voltage when starting. Ran down a loose connection in the "daisy chain" and it solved the problem.

It is also a good idea to disconnect those rusted/loose ground connections and hit them with a wire brush. More metal to metal contact is always better than rust for electrical connections.
