did we ever attack the angle of 4 million boats firing up in the spring time releasing green goo into our so pristine lakes, or even bio RV anti-freeze? well im not a conservationist but i do in some way care about polution. what the *************** i minus well go back to pouring oil down the drains and anti-freeze too
draining the blocks and leaving them empty is sufficient, its practiced over and over from people that get paid to do it, what the fck is the big concern, drain the block and the boat is winterized. it will not crack. I am a polluter also, the persona is there that you need anti-freeze and then in the spring you dump it in the lake.....if Al Gore gets wind of this the practice will stop. I feel better now cause I had a dream last night that i owned a gas station and Carol O'Conner pulled in to fuel up his Honda..needless to say i need therapy |

Time to add my two cents to piss of the masses. When I bought my boat in Florida this spring I had to winterize in order to bring it back to the U.P. of Michigan. Now I'm pretty sure that I'm in one of the coldest climates of the U.S. compared to the rest of you guys. When I winterized I sucked it up through the hose that goes to the thru-hull. When I told people of this on here they criticized my practice. I took it with an open mind. I brought the boat back for a month of below zero temps with no problems. Now this fall when I winterized I weighed the opinions and choose to do it sort of the same.
Ran the engine till the operating temp was @ 160, meaning the thermostat was open, fogged the carb, then sucked up three gallons of AF. Same as I had done in the spring. Changed the oil, This time I pre ordered the oil change hose from skidim.com and installed it to make all future oil changes a breeze. Now to satisfy the critics and for an added bit of insurance I pulled the drain plugs out. All five of them, once removed, released bright green antifreeze. Meaning that dilution was not an issue. For all of those who recommend just draining and no AF, what do you guys think will happen with all the water that is left in the rear of the engine that cant get out of the plug due to the angle that the motor is mounted. And leaving the plugs out to let it escape isnt an option, once the orifice freezes it's not going to come out, I have yet to see water melt it self to reach an open hole. The point Im making is, if your block is freezing any water in it is froze there is no way it's going to find a way out on its own unless it cracks your block and drains in the spring. And hey MR. Brainard, WHO TF do you think you are calling people idiots, you've rubbed me the wrong way, I'm glad your wife puts up with it but I won't. Your no more special than anyone else here. This is a boating forum not a place for you to release your daily stresses so either agree or disagree with what you read, but don't belittle others. It's shows your maturity. Regards |

Bruce, After taking another look at the post, plus looking at the boats he has listed in his signature, I think you're correct!!! The abbreviation tricked me! Actually I was surprised at the question because I would have thought he would have asked the same question to his fellow employees. It must not be White Lake Marine he works at since they would know the answer going back all the years with CC. BTW, I contest their claim to be the oldest CC dealer. Old yes but not the oldest. |

Kevin, I have come up with the idea of an active flotation system that involves inflatable bags and an air tank. It can be activated either with a sensor or a pull cord on the dash. It will satisty the safety concerns for foam and allow the boat to breath so they last forever. I just need an investor to get it to the market.

White Lake - Yes, these guys don't give up when they are right. They actually stayed pretty civil compared to one of our former members' typical retorts.
Congratulations for hanging in there, this is a great group of guys who don't hold grudges, so anything you need they will bend over backwards to help. |

Did any one ever think of using something like 2 litre plastic bottles stuffed in the voids( so they don't roll around) instead of foam?

Pete, I think he's talking about an American Skier.
The early fiberglass boats had foam as an option. I will not refoam a boat either. And pool noodles qualify as foam. Even though the noodles don't absorb water, they trap it and block air circulation. Any kind of foam is very, very bad, except maybe in a brand new, all fiberglass boat, and even they trap water, so who knows in another 10 years maybe we'll be seeing people tear into '94 and up boats that have big problems. The jury is still out on those. |

No the Atom did not come with foam in the floors. Non of the wood boats did and even the early glass didn't have it ether. The glass is peeling off the wood because it was put on as a "quick and dirty" repair/patch job for a bad hull. Glassing a wood hull unless done properly, very carefully and preferably with new wood and epoxy is the "kiss of death" for the boat. It actually will speed up the deterioration of the wood by promoting rot. The glass has got to come off and now most likely the hull will need a new ply skin. Post some pictures. (start a new thread too) |

Ryan, I typically always have one of my boats home for the winter alternating year to year. The idea is to give them a freash coat of varnish/paint of course it always doesn't go as intended!! I'll fog and Stabil only and not even bother with draining. |

I found all of this discussion terribly confusing. I thought I knew how to winterize my boat, but after reading this I wasn't sure...until Alan and Billy cleared it up for me. I think I'm all set now. If it gets really cold, I've got some extra blankets.

A real question now, lets keep this one mature boys. Did the ASkier come with foam in the floors? I have no foam and the wood is solid. I cannot decide if they have been replaced or not. However, the fiberglass is peeling away from the wood in some places. Not a good sign I know.

Although I will say I don't use drugs and certainly do not say like or dude. Correct craft owners are certainly stubborn in their methods.

I would consider going with the MPI bong, then no fogging is required. |

So, dudes, as I'm draining the water and gettin' that AF100 ready, do I hold my finger on or off the bong's carburetor?
You guys crack me up! I laughed my a$$ off reading the last page of all this stuff. This is a great group of folks having tons of fun brought together by a bunch of old boats. Too bad some people take it way too seriously. ssssssssssssstt....eeeeeer man! |

Pete: Yes; I got your welcome a few days ago with my first post on the how to tell a painted boat thread. Then we got into the Ford FE discussion. As far as winterizing; I could probably do nothing and get away with it most years. Part of the risk/reward ratio is what your winter is expected to be. I tend to put more effort into it than necessary; but that’s not even a minimum job for someone just a few miles north of me. I hope I have something of value to offer. I’ve been the one with less than no knowledge many times before. Thanks, Joe |

Oh no!! Not another one!! All I can say is if you follow the recommended procedure (pour in) then you won't have to worry about the T stat and it sure would have made this thread shorter!! Joe, If I haven't already mentioned it, welcome to CCfan. Stick around as I feel you have allot to contribute to the site. |
