If water is going in at the cooler, then oil is going out the exhaust too so the trans isn't being overfilled. I'm sur Eric will be alone and will comment but the front seal issue isn't due to the trans overflowing but rather a sloppy pump. This allows oil to flow around the pump and pressurizes the area at the front shaft seal. 405 hours are on the trans! Still, it may be time for a rebuild.

No name.
Well, we now know the real problem!! Tubing!!! Just kidding here but do try something with a higher skill level like skiing or boarding.

Regarding the water in the trans, I think you got a little side tracted here about the oil comming out the exhaust. That's real hard to detect plus it's not the concern. With a leak in the cooler, the concern is the water getting to the trans. The best way to check out the cooler is to pressure test it to make sure there isn't a leak between the oil and water circuits.

The oil in the bilge isn't related to the cooler. it's probably the front seal and there is a reason for it to leak.

Keep a eye on the color of your trans fluid and do a pressure check on the cooler.

It's def. not leaking back into the exhaust. The fluid ends up back in the bilge with a strawberry shake looking color. 2 weekends ago I took it out for the last time this season, topped it off & she hauled 2 adults on a tube with no slips at all. The tranny works great just leaks like crazy. The boat only has 405 hours.

CHANGE YOUR TRANS COOLER IT'S LEAKING INSIDE AND THE FLUID GOING OUT THE EXHAUST. IF THERE NO FLUID IN THE BOAT IT'S GOING OUT THE BACK INTO THE WATER.

Thanks for the info Eric! No additives it is...phew! I have not changed the cooler either. I really don't see oil leaking from it, more oil coming from the bottom of the tranny, closer to the output flange. One more weekend & it's going on a trip to Sir Eric.

Oh, I can tell the additive tranny's, twice the price to rebuild, they swell the rubber up and cause real problems, dont use them

Did you ever replace the leaking transmission cooler, or whatever it is that is eating quarts of transmission fluid at a time?

Well, you can put a additive in the trans but that's only if you want to give it a quicker kiss of death.

You need to understand that the marine automatic trans really has very little in common with the automotive trans. Both simply use the same fluid. The marine trans does not have the torque converter in it where these additives may help by changing the viscosity and modifies the friction of the fluid. A marine trans simply uses a hydraulic pump to apply pressure on the clutch packs (not a torque converter) which engage/couple the engine to the prop shaft. What used to be done manually with the big shift lever through the floor is now simply done hydraulically.

I have two Core 123:1 PCM here in the shop I will be more than happy to ship one to Eric for rebuild. You can work out the rebuild with him. one is stuck in forward the other just leaks and has a high amount of hours on it but still operates correctly and has good preasure. $300.00 for either plus shipping.
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

all i can say is they cant take low oil like a Velvet, once you glaze the plates from slippage, they lose thier ability to hold.....keep an eye on it.

Well, initially when I changed the oil this summer it looked really watery. I went ahead and flushed it about 3 times, topped it off & ran it. Felt fine except that it began losing oil(about a qt each weekend). I couldn't really tell from where. Last weekend I had a loaded boat & of course without checking the oil at the start I felt it gradually slip until about 25 mins. into it it lost all torque. I trolled it back at about 3mph and added 2 whole friggin qts. Runs fine now. I'm sure I hacked the plates running it low.
