FLY

Exhaust is 3/4" Pipe Thread
J Tube and Block drains are 1/4" Pipe Thread.

PS- I put right angle adapters on these so the water goes into the bilge when you open the valves.

Pipe threads can be confusing to measure since they are tapered and smaller than the OD of the pipe itself but here's some dimensions:

1/8" pipe is .405" OD
1/4" pipe is .540" OD
3/8" pipe is .675" OD
1/2" pipe is .840" OD
3/4" pipe is 1.050" OD

On a fitting like a plug, measure as close to the top (largest OD) of the threads as possible and you'll be close to the dimensions above.

Fly,
You really can't go by the wrench size needed.

I must have had too many hopped up beers this weekend. I just realized I have those petcocks in my shop. They are the same drain we use for the air tanks on our semi trucks and trailers. I also have some for the older style radiators in the Ford tractors.

Greg
I think the plugs are the same. Pipe is measured by the inside diameter, which makes the OD of the threads about 1/2" inch. It can be confusing. My NAPA guy is 1/2 mile from here, I'll pick some up at lunch.
Thanks again. I wasn't thinking of that style petcock. I had ball valves in my hand last week and thought, no way am I puttting these things on my engine.

Yes, one on each side of the block. I wonder why the sizes are different unless I measured it wrong. The base of my plugs is 17/32" with the threads.

I have the solid plug in my hand, and it is 1/4" pipe thread.
Greg, yours has one block drain on each side, correct?
Thanks

I noticed the 1/4" was highlighted in the link. I think the BBC is 3/8".

Edit-I just measured the solid plugs that came out of those water drains...1/2".

Pete has a good pic. I got mine at NAPA but have seen them at West and other places. McMaster is probably the best price and West may be the worst. NAPA was reasonable to have it now.

With your BBC you'll have to trim the 'wings' on a grinder for the port side. The drain is right close to an engine mount.

Pete, I use the same drains you have posted and I must've gotten a good set as they only need to be hand tightened. Sometimes I need that 'monkey' wrench to get them loose.

John,
I do snug mine up with a wrench using a 4" "cresent" (adjustable). Not much though and it's more for keeping them tight rather than leaking.

Hello Pete > I installed the Petcocks w/removable center stem from McMasterCarr on all five of my drains. How tight do you want the center removable handles ? Hand tight or snug up just a bit with wrench ? With the internal seal, can't I just hand tighten ?

thanks Pete, cheers, John
