Josh,
Unless Eric has another idea, it sounds like you need to take a look at the helm to trans cable adjustment. When you move the helm to ether the forward and reverse position (without advancing it to give the engine gas) make sure the shift lever at the trans is moving to the respective forward or reverse position. When the helm is in neutral, the same is true for the neutral position on the trans. With wear at the pivot points on the trans and helm the shifting can get sloppy. Cables can stretch too but that will only throw off the adjustment in one direction (forward).

the stuffing box isnt hot actually i need to redo it its leaking more than it should. i did find the manual thanks.

the tach doesnt shoot up. maybe this will help...like when im docking and using reverse i go from neutral to reverse and it seems like it just doesnt go into gear right away i slowly push the throttle more the motor is not reving up just idles till it finally catches then it takes off. its kinda the same with going into forward. from a dead stop ill push the throttle forward just to where it should be at idle speed and leave it and it will take a sec and it will put itself into gear. does that explain it better. -Josh

does the tach shoot up under heavy power? it will surge if it is slipping, it should not delay in any way, when you shift the lever it should go right into gear. if you have to rev the engine to make it go into gear then there is an internal leak

Josh,
Disconnect the shift cable at the trans as recommended but with it in the water running. Then try manually shifting the trans and see what happens. This will tell you if there is a cable adjustment problem. Without the engine running, shifting the trans is simply moving a valve. It's not like a manual trans where you are physically moving a shift fork/clutch.

No, repacking the shaft stuffing box shouldn't have a effect unless you have it so tight it binds the shaft but you would only notice that at low speeds. Is the stuffing box running hot?

Did you find the Velvet drive manual and look at it for checking the fluid level? I ask because you asked about the procedure again. BTW, the problem doesn't sound like it's caused by a low oil level.

That's sounds like what it does. But it only does it for a second and then reengages. Sometimes you can ease into the throttle and it doesn't do it but most of the time it does. Since I bought it I have not repacked the drive shaft could that have anything to do with it?

The tranny in you boat is very simple.A plunger connected to the shift lever directs fluid to the clutch pack.
Could you describe your problem a little better? From what I read it sounds like a delay going into gear and slipping under load?

Josh,
In the sites reference section, there is a sub section with manuals. One of them is for the Velvet drive. Check out page 22 for the procedure to check the fluid level. Heres a link for you: Velvet drive manual

Welcome to CCfan. Tell us more about the boat and of course we love pictures. Stringers in good shape or have they been replaced?

Are you SURE it was full? Describe the process you used to check it.

Disconnect the shifting cable and put it in gear by hand.If it goes in fine your cable\shifter is the problem. If not theres a tranny guy on this forum that treats us right.

Okay I just bought my 75 in July and my its been running alright, but I have noticed that the transmission seems to hesitate. At first the it was shifting fine then it seemed like I was pushing the throttle more and more. Once it engages and i start to accelerate it cuts out and then reengages. I'm not sure what to look at if anyone can help that would be awesome. Thanks
