Did it come off without a puller? If so, then it defiantly was installed wrong and you need to review the prop thread.

Keeping in mind that it's the taper that really holds the prop on, you can actually back the nut off slightly to line up the cotter pin hole. I believe it's mentioned in the thread.

Pulling it off was the easy bit.Seems the castle nut is very hard to line up with the shaft hole to allow a split pin in.Just a pain to be fair and im struggling with a shoulder rotator cuff injury so im not very flexable at the min.

You mentioning problems with prop install/removal got me to thinking that it may be a good idea to take a look at this thread You do have a puller for the removal correct?

Seems right, but as you can see by my avatar, I am not as well versed on what size prop is right for you boat as others here would be. Someone who knows your boat better than I will chime in, I'm sure.

This thread will answer your question.

In your case your engine turns left but your prop turns right as the transmission reverses the rotation.

How do I tell if prop is left hand or right hand.I cant take it off as its just took me an hour to get it all back on.

The stamping was 14 16 but i didnt notice and RH OR LH.Its a 1996 196 Ford.
