what Jasbo's is talking about for instance, is the difference between lets say a 10-17-004 and a 10-17-003 is the pump is indexed for a particular rotation, one for a right one for a left, thus the different model numbers are for reference. The transmissions are identical and you can use either one or visa versa if the pump is indexed correctly.
i would love to know what jazzbo's get for a trans. It sounds to me like the front seal gave out either due to age or its pushed out and cocked from the pump having excessive clearance and wear. |

Well, Jasper trans must not know very much about trans's!! They all can run both directions. All it takes is a pump index on the front end to match the engine rotation. I highly recommend not talking to them again!!! Eric I'm sure will be by in the morning but he's the guy to talk to. It's his business rebuilding marine transmisions!!! I looked for his website for a phone # but it looks like his site is down. It's called Fantastic Finish Marine in Medina Ohio. |

Well I talked with Jasper transmission, and they said the 03 is a reversed transmission. Meaning the engine ran the opposite way.. I don't know how true this is.
This is what happened to my transmission. I was out on the lake, backed into the marina, and that was it. It still moves in reverse, not forward. There was a ton (I assume all) of trans fluid on the bilge. I was towed in, and here I am now. The fluid looked good, not burnt. I added more fluid when I got home and it just went to the bottom as well. So does the 1982 Nautique with a 351 spin in a different direction than the 1979 Ski Tique with a 302? Or are they the same? |

Keegan,
Almost every type of seal leaks to some extent and it's the leakage that lubricates the sealing surface. I wouldn't worry about it until it gets excessive to the point where it's spraying all over the inside of the dog house. |

Since the title is up there I have a VD(go ahead guys) question too. Noticed I have a small amount of ATF on my coupler. Does not seem to be enough to drip into the bilge but its there where it does not belong. Checked the dipstick and the level looks good. Likely culprits?

200.00 tops for a used trans......unless it was a new take-off. but like Pete said, transmission "cores" are cores and they are sitting around for a reason, A transmission that sits for extended periods will give you grief

Do check the damper plate as Eric mentioned but also keep in mind there may be a reason the trans you want to buy is so cheap!! BTW, what do you consider cheap? Depending on what you find with the damper, you may also want to consider sending the old trans to Eric for a rebuild.
Welcome to CCfan. Is your boat in the diaries? If not, get the info into Keith so he can post it. We love pictures!!! EDIT: Just in case you don't know what the damper is, it's the spring loaded coupling between the engine flywheel and the trans. They do go out. Make sure you put a new one in with ether trans. |

yes, its actually an upgrade because the 03 uses 2 reverse plates insted of 1
what exactly happened, maybe your damper snapped? |

Hey guys. I've got a 1979 Ski Tique 16' with a Ford commander 302 in it. The transmission gave out, it is a Velvet Drive model 1017-002. I found a guy selling one for pretty cheap, but it is out of a 1982 Nautique with a 351. I know the 302/351 blocks mate the same way transmission wise, but this Nautique has a Velvet Drive 1017-003 in it. So the real question is...
What is the difference between a Velvet Drive 1017-002 and a 1017-003, and will the 003 work in my tique as a replacement. Thanks! |
