I'm very late to the party here but just picked up a 176, she's a beaut! This might be a silly question, but when swapping out the rudder ports, for the 11-A, are the hole patterns identical?

IMOP Both rudders were minimal effective for slow speed maneuverability. I think spend the extra jing on a 11-A rudder and port it would be one of the best boat buy upgrade's one could do for that model!

How about a 176 and the 176-specific nibral rudder... any feedback on how that would make the boat handle (as opposed to the stainless home made one)?

Some people may be interested in swapping the rudder only, as opposed to changing the port as well (since that is needed to use the 11A).

Why you Ask. Because the CCF fan server lost all my old log on information and I could not access the web site with the old persona! For some reason it was troublesome so I just became another persona.
Oh well!

Yeah, i think there was more info on that in the thread from Jody. He said management didn't want the 176 eclipsing their flagship Ski Nautique so they purposely detuned it with the rudder.

3:00 Am here In Australia Long flight's yesterday!

176.... Great little boat! If you are a slalom skier probably the best slalom boat ever designed up to the current 200 platform.
Yea one could say the boat was to good and it was up staging the Ski Nautique in some realms of function. The decision was made to De-tune so to speak via utilizing a smaller rudder.
Find a 176 with the GT-40 and a 11-a rudder installed and it will track and drive as good or better then it's big brother.
I would some day like to Parlay into one!

No sure if it was made clear in this thread, but Tim C confirmed that you can't put an 11a on a 176 unless you also swap out the rudder port. The 11a has a 1-1/4" shaft, the 176 uses a 1-1/8". Both the ss home made rudder and the nibral replacement are 1-1/8"... And I'm *guessing the nibral replacement offers a handling improvement similar to the 11a, but I don't know if anyone has ever done that comparison back to back.

Your welcome Chris.I have been looking for that thread on that wood boat so I know how you feel. For that thread on the rudder I remembered Jody talking about it so I google searched F1 Inboards 176. Sometimes you find them!

Here it is from Jody himself-

What do ya want to know about the 176?

I can tell ya set up with a 11-A tabbed rudder and a GT-40 they are wonderfull ski boats. In My opinion one of if not the finest slalom boats ever built.

This was the first computer rendered boat that We Built at Correct Craft. All the original frame stations for the plug came off a computer and then C&C cut on a router. A master Craftsmen tool maker then skined and faired the plug. when one looks a 176 you can see the clean crisp tool work that this man did.

I remember that the boat was so good that managament at the time had us de-tune the boat by installing a hand made stainless steel rudder that was way under sized. Down side to the boat is that it has a rather small interrior space.

None the less it was ahead of its time as it truly was a wide body boat in comparison to what was built at that time.

Also the 176 when weighted made a pretty fair little wakeboard boat.

When Ron Scarpa was still with us he had a GT-40 equipped stripped down 176 that he kept even a number of years after he went to Malibu.

If you dont mind small interrior space and want the best wakes for overall skiing the 176 is a great little boat!

Wish I had one!

Here is the original thread, after HW posted the rudder pictures it jogged the old memory cells

Chris, that's what everyone has been telling me since I picked mine up. It makes sense given the shape. It looks like it would create a lot of turbulence vs a rudder with chord.

watrski have you used both? report?

What was the performance issue with the welded rudder? Did it stall in a fast turn?

Come on guys - CC brought the old guy that used to build their trailers out of retirement to make the rudders. Give him a break!! All he had was his old AC "buzz box" and we know SS rod runs better on DC!!! Pluss, I'm sure he didn't know about some of the more high tech items like splatter shield!!

Noticed this yesterday. Appears to be a mid-96 model year switch? What's the deal Jody, did Correct Craft run out of supply on this rudder?
