Yes, it does appear to have been painted with a rattle can- not a quality job by any means. $1k will in fact take it home! If it doesnt go in the next few weeks though, Im going to have to wrap it up for winter and relist it in the spring, as the temporary cover wont take a snow load... but Id much rather it went to a new home.

With a little elbow grease, just envision what the finished product could look like!

FWIW, the paint on this boat isnt what scared me away... its the long list of other projects I have in front of it. That includes this Skier, which has a heavy layer of paint covering it... its red/cream under the yellow/white. Im planning to use Capt Lee's Spra strip just like Sanity did- its safe for gelcoat and popular with the Corvette crowd.

As far as I can tell, the previous owner wasnt the brightest... its about the most half-arsed paint job that Ive ever seen! No doubt they thought it would look better afterward, not realizing that the original finish was gel (not paint). My guess is that the original gel was either a little oxidized, or the original stripe/graphics were looking worn, and a "fresh spray" was their idea of a refresh. I see no evidence of any underlying damage that they were trying to cover up... heck, they really only sprayed what they could easily reach- there is next to no paint below the chine and the hull sides are pretty sparsely covered. The deck has the most coverage.

Sanity was able to remove the paint from her Mustang in this thread with pictures. Note that the paint she was removing was laid on pretty thick, and included a nice primer layer. Not the case with this gray boat.

Does that mean you have renewed interest?

FYI, I do have one other interested party.

Here is the link. No tower on it. Just a ton of gray paint. I asked my self the same question....why was it painted in the first place.

do a google site search. You will be reading for the rest of the day. Not sure if anyone has removed paint but I am guessing a sand, wetsand and then buff is in order. It is very time consuming just to brighten up the gel coat, I can imagine trying to remove paint. My question would be, why was it painted. Maybe more problems lurk beneath.

Does any one have any experience with gel coat restore? I am considering purchasing and begining to restore a 1980 SN, someone down the line decided to paint this boat gray. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
