Foam board is styrene - pretty flammable & not a good material for boats. You could use coosa but it is expensive. Pine works great, esp. if you soak it with CPES (which you can make cheap).

Ok summer is over, the 1989 is winterized and Im getting ready to start working on the 1980 again. So Im about to start my secondary stringers. I see they are often constructed of pine or plywood. Would it be possible to use foam board as a form and then fiberglass over it? I might be wrong but I am under the impression that the strength comes from the fiber glass not so much the actually stringer. The wood is used in the primary so there is something for the engine mound to bolt on too.

Brian,
The major difference is epoxy and polyvinyl aren't hygroscopic like polyester. That's why most boat companies switched years ago. It's also stronger.

I'd question the polyester is easier to work with. Through all the years of working with it, I've always found it unpredictable of when it will start to "kick" (set up). Many also have found the smell isn't as bad with epoxy.

Yes he told me both were great products and has found that some people like one better then the other. Also that polyesters were easier to work with and cheaper in cost. What are your feelings on this? I did start the primaries last night at 2:00 in the morning, hope to have them finished tomorrow.

Brian,
Did Mertons say anything about epoxy or even polyvinyl resins rather than the polyester you plan on using?

That is exactly how I did it. Kicks off real fast when you have a big bag though so you have to be prepared to work fast. The resin kicks faster when it is in a "ball" rather than spread out thin. The heat is exponential when it is in a big ball. Had a few bags get so hot they melted.

I'm pretty sure this would be a polyester resin base product. With the epoxy and the CPES I would not use it. Go with the filler mixed in to your epoxy resin as mentioned.

brian 826 - you need to mix up a gooey mixture of fiberglass and microbaloons or flox or whatever filler you ordered.   read some of the stringer threads where they talk about "peanut butter"   3/4 of an inch is a pretty big gap, but if you mix the PB good and thick, set yoru stringer and then squirt it into the gap (like frosting a cake), you should be able to fill that up. I am certainly going to default to the guys have done this, but that is what I would try first... My build is in the saving money stage, so thanks for showing the way!

Ok so I made an exact carbon copy to the pressure treated stringer the PO had installed....the other one as I have posted is completely destroyed. Anyways I put them in the boat and dry fitted the engine mount, which seems to fit perfect. But for the past hour I have been staring at the 3/4" gap in the center of the stringer.....I would assume that not being a professional boat builder Im not the only one who has had this problem, but I'm not 100% sure what to do. The local boat/fiberglass shop said to use boat floor putty (not sure if thats what it is, but he said it is a common mistake.

Money is why i went to wood construction.with a house restoration going on at the same time it seems to disappear quickly.Justin, that black gel does not stand up too well.it should be a fun learning process.i hope some can learn from my mistakes, just be patient because its going to be a while.

It seems to take most folks some searching for the lumber but you will probably find it if you are persistent. Took me 2 days on the phone but I finally got it just a few miles from my house.

Brian I was having a similar issue I think...are you getting an error with the pic size? I actually had to adjust a setting on my camera to make the mega pix smaller and then it worked for me

hmm maybe a format issue, do you save them as jpeg? maybe a setting on your internet explorer or something. You could try using firefox or try uploading from a different pc to see if its the pc or the pictures.
