over the years Boat US seems to be about the best from my experiences of dealing with the insurance companies, sometimes the companies will baffle you, i had a rotted keel on a boat and they sent a surveyor because there was a small crack on the bottem, it was a 7k repair, it was a 1988, he ok'd it and they paid the bill, on the otherside of the coin, i qouted painting the complete side of a boat because of a gouge, in order for the paint to match you have to do the side, it was one of the big three that knocked it down to 700.00 and made me spot it in and you could see the color difference in the sun.
the best one that sticks in my mind was a 20k bill, the owner pulled it into nuetral when he was powering up, it was a Tiarra, twins, I asked the owner if he did it on purpose and he said "god no" call your insurance company and see what they say.....they covered it |

Everyone's insurance needs are different. That said, I have changed my homeowner, boat, motorcycle, and antique vehicle insurance every few years. I believe I have three different insurance companies for my boats because I got a better rate that way. I have kept my "driver car" insurance with Geico for about 15 years. It seems that if you stay with any company they continually raise your rates, but if you are a reasonable risk there is always someone willing to undercut your current insurer to get your business. This has not been true with Geico however, They have not raised my rates despite several non chargeable claims, They are also the only insurance company I have had that has authorized new factory replacement body panels for my cars up to 6 years old instead of the aftermarket trash. My cars are in very good condition however and that was the justification the adjuster used to justify it. I would get reasonable liability coverage for my "stuff" and then cover everything with an umbrella policy "just in case" if you have assets that can be attached to a loss.
Good luck and happy hunting. |

Ive always been taught that having high liability coverage is the definition of "cheap insurance". Its great to be cautious and responsible, but that wont eliminate the possibility of there being an accident. It will always come back to you (the boat owner) and youve gotta CYA... and thats the reason you have insurance in the first place. The cost delta between "minimum" coverage and appropriate coverage is not huge- and certainly not worth the gamble, IMHO. Just one of the many joys of boat ownership!

Tim thats per person. Maybe it is the minumum. I am just curious but why would one want to up there insurance to 200/500, espcially if most of us are cautious on the water and watch out for others?Being a boater, the most dangerous people down here are kids on those darn jet skiies! If you can stay clear from them.. Or do you think having maxium coverage is best?? |

$100k per person, or $100k per accident? Or both (ie, $100k/$100k)? Personally, I consider $100k/300k a minimum, with 200/500 being better. Just curious if we're talking apples to apples. |

I'm in agreement with finding an independent agent. We are currently with Mercury, which is a smaller insurance company that we were with in CA, also. I'm not sure if they have Mercury in your area, but it would be worth checking into. They tend to work with small, independent agents.

I would have to agree with you some of the big name insurance love cash in on ski boats. Mine as you stated is 100k each occurence and 5k per person for medical payments. Great insurance for cheap costs.. I been very pleased and very lucky. I started with State Farm for the first couple yrs and for about the same coverage I get now but for 260.00 yr. |

Don't know if anyone has used them lately but I have in the past. Went to go back to them and since they are inboards they wanted a marine survey done. I called and asked why, just because. What about I/O's? No. Why? just because, and this from a company who is supposed to be for boaters? All this for a boat that I only carry liability on. |

I have Ski Safe. State Farm for everything else. I find State Farm to be easy to deal with. Couple fender benders(wife, not me) . I also totaled a snowmobile a few years back and though the claim could have easily been denied/ questioned they gave me zero trouble. It was legit, but If I was them, I probably would not have paid it.
They do not like the boats to have more than 10hp per foot. When i bought my 330 hp 21 ft skiboat that will touch 38 on a good day, they didnt want to insure it. Even though i had full coverage ( was under $200yr) from them at the time on my 18' 150hp Ranger bass boat that would run 65 mph all day long. They just dont get boats. Mike |

You got to call around. I find companies are different for each boat. I've found State Farm to be a great company, but I'm getting a good deal on an 88 we've had insured since 92. On our '03, they were rediculously high and we went with Ski Safe. Neither company will insure a '60's boat, so I've found Progressive to be really easy to deal with on stated value and their prices are really low. I've never had to collect from any of them, so don't know about that end.

I use state farm and I know they arent the cheapest but our agent has been really good to us and I do think it is actually a good company. They arent going to be the cheapest though. I think you are always better of with a mutual company, they have no incentive to shaft you. Agreed though you must understand your policy. You cannot get upset something is not covered if it specifically says it isnt, even if it seems it should, they have to draw a line somewhere.

Everyone's definition of "full coverage" will vary. For $123, my guess is that your liability limits are dangerously low... thats about half of what you could expect to pay for a policy with acceptable coverage (100k/300k), at least around here. In my experience, none of the "big name" insurance companies understand ski boats. As soon as they hear that the boat has 200+ hp, they start seeing dollar signs. I have all my boats insured through Global Marine (who is really just a broker), but theyre endorsed by USA Waterski... all of my premiums are pretty reasonable. Ski Safe is another option to consider, but be wary- they stopped offering agreed upon replacement value policies for "older" boats a few years ago (like my '90). |

I agree, I hate insurance companies, Banks borrow money from insurance companies, except AIG lol. but really though the most important thing is to read your policy, when i get a boat with a prop hit, i demand to pull the trans and inspect, so really the shop you take your boat to should also demand this type of service also, you cant just slap a new prop on and be on your way, the big companies piss and moan and will always tell me if something does happen down the road its covered, but.....been down that road already when i trans fails 2 months later because of a prop hit that wasnt covered...will not be covered because time has lapsed.

if you know the name the more they will fck you, i have a car at my shop now, about 6000.00 in damage, the kid was using his parents car for delivering pizza's, he hit somebody and mentioned it to the adjuster....bastards wont cover it because they say it was being used as a business car, NATIONWIDE, I constantly have problems with Nationwide and Progressive.
here is what you want to do. get a smaller company that doesnt have the crew the larger guys have, all the smaller name company's just say fax an estimate and they send you a check, with the big guys, and they are big for a reason dont like to give money away. |

J, find an independant agent, they can shop multiple companies for you all through their agency. I have been with a couple of different companies over the last 5 years, was with farmers for a while, and like you the rates kept going up. I ended up saving 1300 per year, all while adding two newer vehicles and a boat.... I guess my loyalties were lying in the wrong place, and my insurance figured they could clean out my wallet.... If you need a local independant, I had good luck with the Dave ramsey ELP in my area.

Ok, i've decided to start looking at switching my insurances not just boat but home, auto etc. any suggestions? I have everything with Erie now and have had no problems but it keeps going up every year and we have had no claims, so I am thinking of starting to shop around and thought you folks may have some suggestions where to start.
thanks, Jason |
