heat is gone, changed out a boat load of connections and cleaned up some wires. I think the worst connection was the one I made at the coil.

Pete,
Thanks for the help, I switched motors and the new motor had old coil but no resistor, So I bought one that does not require the resistor. The gauge was a new one I had no real reason. Yeah I have plenty of people that could help but I like to at least give it a go. Everything matches the diagrahm, I am think the coil is heating up the switch, nothing is getting hot enough to trip. I have not ran the boat to see if it is staying hot, I was thinking that when the coil starts to discharge the heat will go the other way. |

Mike,
Since you are in the general contracting field, you must know someone in the electrical field who could give you a hand. Why are you changing the gauges? Why did you install the new coil? |

The clock was the end of the ground loop so I figured that would be fine, The new guage is a VDO just like the one that came out. But it could still use a different sending unit. Anyway not sure what to ohm bor what it should read but will take a stab at it soon, Any ideas on the indicator lights. I guess the way I had them was fine but not real sure. What a mess

You don't need to be an electrition, just figure out that diagram and what's going on and your good to go. My coil stays cool, but the ballast resistor does get warm so you may not have an issue there. The clock should have had a ground to it somehow that might not be on the stereo control. If your instaling new guages they may require new sensors to work correctly. It could also be possible there is nothing wrong you just haven't noticed these things because you've always started the boat. That's why I decided to wire my stereo as completely seperates as I could, less chance of causing unseen electrical grimlins.

I am much better wood monkey than electrician, Yes on the wiring diagrham. The only thing I took out was the clock one single red wire from battery side. The coil is flame thrower II without resistor, new harness at the motor, I have cleanned and tightened terminals. Yes some help using the ohm would be great. I hooked the old oil pressure gauge back up and it stayed on 0. the Tach seems to be jumping around when turning motor over as well. The hour meter is not running

Do you have a volt/ohm meter? Have you been using it? I've got a feeling you may need some help but, keep posting and we'll do our best! Wiring diagram? Are you following it? |

Took almost everything apart, finally figured out it is the coil making it heat up, kinda of normal for a little heat I guess, not blowing the breaker hot but kind of pretty warm. I have not ran the boat to see if it cools off after the coil has some place to use the energy. The hour meter still seems to not be working. The new oil pressure gauge goes all the way over and stays not sure what it is going to do when the boat is running. But the radio control is in a cool place.

double check against the wiring diagram
also could be a weak wire or connection. Make sure you snugged everything up well. |

Help,
New ignition switch is heating up the breaker when in the on position. I removed the clock and installed new indicator lights and new oil pressure guage, along with the new switch. does not seem like the hour meter is working, possible open ground, The clock had one power wire coming off the switch, it did not go anywhere after that. I am going to check for an open ground. Dang it Mike |

Be sure that you're not creating some sort of ground loop which will cause some kind of unwanted buzz in the system. I wasn't sure that wasn't going to happen in my case so I was prepared to run a power wire from the batteries if needed, the ground for everything in the line does go straight to the battery and doesn't come from the dash. To turn the amps on and off a switch on the amp turn on lead would probably be the easiest, otherwise it sounds like you would have to have 2 runs of speaker wire.

I did not think the hour meter would run in the accessory position.
I was thinking about running the radio off the breaker and the amp off the key. That way if I am messing around I can still listen to the radio without powering up the amps. Thought about the other way to and I would forget to turn the amps off for sure. Mike |

Mine has a similair wiring setup as I have an 86 and the PO installed a separate independent switch from the key. So the radio can be switched on or off without the key. This avoids the hour meter issue. If you are chilling eating lunch at the lake you dont want your hour meter to be running.

I like how that fits there. I power mine off of an accesory breaker that was used for the original stereo. It runs to the powers iPod cable, the volume control box and then gets used for the amp turn on cable. The amps themselves are powered from the batteries. I didn't have an 4th position on the key at the time, but powdering it from there meant the hour meter would run with the stereo, that was no good since I listen while I'm doing things around the boat at the house.

Hi,
installing new radio sony cdx, and a remote. Questioning what to draw the remote turn on off of. Can not decide if I want to take it off the accessory 0r the key . I installed a 4-way a couple of weeks ago. so it is there. I never used the clock timer thing so the remote went there. 
Any suggestions |
