Install new bearings on the alternator if you have the capacity. Lots cheaper than having it done!! The bearings should cost around $5 each and you want to replace the complete alternator??

Get it rebuilt, probably just needs a bearing. You might even be able to do it yourself. Search the 'net, plenty of youtubes showing how to.

I tightened the alternator belt which appeared to be a little loose. After tightening the belt, to about 1/2" of movement when pressed with my thumb. When I took the boat out it was ticking like a clock at idle and the sound increased proportionately with the RPMs. I took the belt off and the alternator pulley had a little bit of play. The other pulleys moved smoothly with no free play. I put the belt on a littler more loose when I re-installed it. The tick sound is now barely audible.
So I am thinking it is the alternator bearings, so should I get the alternator rebuilt or buy another one? Thanks Tom |
