Skidim said mine's the original Prestolite conversion with the purple and black and it should work fine. We'll be boating soon... |

I replaced the whole thing on the 87 Nautique with the 454 with a Davis Unified ignition Marine HEI. Very hot spark and no trouble at all. This would be my prefered choise again as well.

Then I believe the coil you posted, the one designed to run without a resister, is the correct one. You may wish to call Skidim on the phone just to confirm. The reason I asked about number of wires, is because the 3 wire Mallory Electronic distributors actually need the coil to be run through a ballast resistor. |

That looks like a good choice to me. Are you working with a 2 wire or 3 wire dizzy?

This one is $49 plus $11 to ship:
SKIDIM PCM COIL Summit Racing has the MSD Blaster 8222 for about $54 shipped. I'm leaning towards the PCM simply because it says "Coil EI" and Prestolite (which is the type I have). |

either or both -
don't use a coil that needs an external resistor without an external resistor. |

I'm getting real close to finishing assembly on my 351. I'm waiting on parts; I'm hoping to get it back in the boat this weekend or at least next week.
I've been reading up on the distributor, coil, and ballast resistor and I need a bit of clarification. I've got an electronic ignition distributor and the ballast resistor was bypassed initially. The old coil got tossed. I have another one but it clearly states on the outside: USE WITH EXTERNAL RESISTOR. Which is dependent on the BR, the coil or the distributor? The contacts inside old cap are a bit corroded but everything seems tight. I don't mind buying new if it'll help the engine start the first time and run better. |
