Over tIghten the gland nut and you will not be able to easily turn the steering wheel

Well, that might explain it! Yea, it's been above 90 all summer. I'll take a pipe wrench and see if there's a bit of tightening to be done, but... that might be the answer, yes?

Do you possibly have a friend who could help out and show you the tightening procedure?
If not, the gland has a RH tread on it so clockwise looking at the top will tighten it.

Except when the temp and relative humidity is above 90. In that case your nuts are going to drip no matter what you do.

The "gland" is the packing itself. There is a seal inside the big nut. Back off the little jam nut. Look closely at the threads, you will see which way to turn. Then snug the jam nut back against the big once once adjusted properly.

Before replacing the packing in the port, Tighten the gland first. This can be done in the water.

Don't take it.apart in the water. Your rudder will fall out and be in the bottom of the lake. Water comes up because there is a small gap between the rudder and the part shown above. The packing creates the seal but yet still allows for smooth movement of the rudder. If the rudder was pressed in it wouldn't turn so there is a gap. Replace the packing on land put it all back together just about hand tight on the top nut and adjust for minimal to no dripping when in the water.

There is a drip from the area indicated by the arrow. Can I take it apart and look at stuffing/o-rings while it's in the water?

Just for my information, how does water come up into the rudder assembly?

I put 5200 on the bottom of the boat around the rudder plate. It made no difference in the leak.
